About Government Medical College, Ernakulam
Government Medical College, Ernakulam (GMC Ernakulam), formerly known as Cochin Medical College, is a premier government-run medical institution located in Kalamassery, Kochi, Kerala. Established in 1999 under the Co-operative Academy of Professional Education (CAPE) under the Department of Co-operation, Government of Kerala, the college was taken over as a full-fledged government institution on 11 December 2013. The college shifted to its present 60-acre campus at the HMT Estate, Kalamassery in 2004, inaugurated by then Chief Minister Shri A.K. Antony. Affiliated with Kerala University of Health Sciences (KUHS) and approved by the National Medical Commission (NMC), the college offers 110 MBBS seats annually. The campus houses a 700-bedded multi-specialty teaching hospital, the Cochin Cancer Research Centre, a College of Nursing, Biomedical Engineering, and Operation Theatre Technician courses. As a government medical college, it provides one of the most affordable and high-quality medical educations in India, with a highly competitive NEET cutoff. The hospital offers super-specialty services in Cardiology, Nephrology, Neurology, Paediatric Surgery, and Cardiothoracic Surgery, and gained international recognition during COVID-19 for its healthcare delivery.
