About Government Medical College, Idukki

Government Medical College, Idukki (GMCI) is a government medical college established in 2014 by the Government of Kerala, situated in Cheruthoni near the iconic Idukki Dam in the Cardamom Hills of the Western Ghats. The college was set up as an upgrade of the existing District Hospital, Idukki, with the key policy objective of providing tertiary healthcare, teaching, and research facilities to the remote, hilly, and tribal areas of Kerala โ€” particularly the socially backward communities of Idukki district. The college received its initial Letter of Permission (LOP) in 2014 for 50 seats; however, accreditation was withdrawn by the Medical Council of India (now NMC) in 2017 due to infrastructural inadequacies. The Government of Kerala undertook extensive remediation over the following years, and the National Medical Commission (NMC) restored the approval in 2022 for 100 MBBS seats. The first batch of 100 students commenced classes on November 15, 2022. The college is affiliated with Kerala University of Health Sciences (KUHS), Thrissur and spreads over a 90-acre campus with modern academic blocks, a hospital complex, residential facilities, and student amenities. The 2014 and 2015 MBBS batches achieved a 100% pass rate in their first year. The attached hospital currently has 300+ beds, providing clinical exposure across Medicine, Surgery, Paediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, and other specialties.
