About Government Medical College, Kasaragod
Government Medical College, Kasaragod is a newly established government medical institution set up by the Government of Kerala under the Department of Medical Education, located in Ukkinadka, near Mundayathadukka in Badiadka Panchayat, Kasaragod district. The NMC approval for 50 MBBS seats was granted in September 2025, announced by Health Minister Veena George on September 2, 2025 — one of the two new government medical colleges approved alongside GMC Wayanad in that cycle. The college is funded by KIIFB (Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board) with an administrative sanction of ₹160 crore for construction. As of 2025–26, the academic block at Ukkinadka has been completed, while the permanent hospital block remains under construction (stalled due to contractor payment disputes; pending High Court resolution). The teaching hospital currently used is the General Hospital, Kasaragod — renamed as the Medical College Hospital — located in Kasaragod town. The college serves the northernmost district of Kerala — Kasaragod — often called the 'Land of Seven Languages' (Malayalam, Beary, Tulu, Kannada, Konkani, Marathi, and Urdu). The college addresses a longstanding healthcare and medical education gap in this geographically and culturally distinct district bordering Karnataka.
