About Government Medical College, Kolkata

Government Medical College, Kolkata — officially Medical College & Hospital, Kolkata (MCHK) and popularly known as Calcutta Medical College or MCK — is the oldest medical college in Asia to teach modern Western medicine. Founded on January 28, 1835, under the patronage of Lord William Bentinck and inaugurated to classes on June 1, 1835, it is a cornerstone of South Asian medical history. The site witnessed India's first human dissection by Madhusudan Gupta in 1836, making it a landmark not just for Indian medicine but for global scientific history. Located at 88, College Street, Kolkata — in the heart of the city's intellectual district near College Square (Boi Para) — the college spans a 26-acre campus and is affiliated with the West Bengal University of Health Sciences (WBUHS) and approved by the National Medical Commission (NMC). It is managed by the Government of West Bengal, Department of Health & Family Welfare. The college is home to a 1,900+ bedded tertiary teaching hospital serving over 4,000 OPD patients daily, and offers MBBS, MD/MS, DM/MCh, B.Sc Nursing, and PG Diploma programs across 4 UG and 34+ PG courses. In December 2024, ICMR recognized it as the best medical college in Eastern India with a 70% excellence score. With NIRF rank #44 (2024, Medical) and consistent top-50 standings, MCK combines unparalleled historical legacy with active clinical excellence, research output, and state-of-the-art facilities including the Regional Institute of Ophthalmology (the only one in West Bengal). Notable alumni include Bidhan Chandra Roy (2nd Chief Minister of West Bengal), Kadambini Ganguly (first certified South Asian female physician in Western medicine), and Nirmal Kumar Dutta (Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize, 1965).
