About Government Medical College, Kozhikode
Government Medical College, Kozhikode — popularly known as Calicut Medical College (CMC) — was established on August 5, 1957, as the second medical college in Kerala. Inaugurated by Health Minister Dr. A. R. Menon, the institution has grown into a premier national center for medical education, healthcare, and research. Spread across a sprawling 270-acre campus about 8 km east of Kozhikode city, it is affiliated with Kerala University of Health Sciences (KUHS) and recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC). The college serves nearly 40% of Kerala's population through its vast hospital complex. With 250 MBBS seats, 215 PG seats across 26 disciplines, and 29 super-specialty seats across 10 disciplines, it is one of India's largest medical colleges. The attached teaching hospital has a total bed strength of 3025, making it the largest hospital in the country by bed capacity. Landmark institutions within the campus include the Institute of Maternal and Child Health (IMCH, 1100 beds), the Regional Cancer Centre, the Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (IMHANS), the Institute of Palliative Medicine, and the Institute of Sports Medicine.
