About Government Medical College, Miraj

Government Medical College, Miraj (GMC Miraj) is one of the oldest and most prestigious government medical colleges in southern Maharashtra, established in 1962. Located at Maji Sainik Vasahat, Pandharpur Road, Miraj — 416410 (Sangli district), the college is affiliated to MUHS Nashik and approved by NMC. Administered by DMER, Government of Maharashtra, it is spread over approximately 34.3 acres. Miraj has a rich healthcare legacy: Highness Shrimant Patwardhan started the first Government Hospital in Miraj in 1864, and Sir William Wanless established various healthcare institutes in 1892 — laying the foundation for what became one of the leading medical institutions in Western Maharashtra. In 1982, under a crash programme, a new library, ladies hostel, new boys hostel, and more staff quarters were constructed. GMC Miraj offers MBBS (200 seats), MD/MS (47 PG courses across 24 departments), and PG Diploma programmes. The college has two attached hospitals: GMC Hospital Miraj (320 beds) and PVP Government Hospital Sangli (380 beds) — combined 700 beds — serving the healthcare needs of southern Maharashtra. The hospitals have 24×7 emergency and trauma care, eye bank, blood bank, burn treatment, critical care, pharmacy, and physiotherapy. Faculty are highly rated (4.3/5 on Collegedunia).
