Government Medical College, Omandurar is a prestigious public medical institution established in 2015 by the Government of Tamil Nadu. It holds the distinction of being the first government medical college in the Chennai district after the colonial British era. Located at the historic Omandurar Government Estate on Wallajah Road, Triplicane, in the heart of Chennai, the college is affiliated with The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University and recognised by the National Medical Commission (NMC). Spread across a 70.02-acre campus, GMC Omandurar offers MBBS (100 seats annually) and postgraduate MD/MS programs with 31 PG seats across seven specialties. The institution is attached to Omandurar Government Hospital, a 1,000-plus bed tertiary care teaching hospital providing free medical services to Chennai's urban population, ensuring rich clinical exposure for students. GMC Omandurar has 100 MBBS seats per year approved by NMC for AY 2024-25. Of these, 85 seats are filled through the Tamil Nadu State Quota counselling (DME TN / Medical Selection Committee) and 15 seats through the All India Quota (MCC) counselling.

For the AIQ (15% seats), the 2024 last-round closing AI rank was approximately 9,624 for the General category and ~11,468 for OBC. For the Tamil Nadu State Quota (85% seats), the General (OC) category state rank opened at 604 and closed at ~729 in Round 1; BC opened at 687 and closed at ~900; SC state rank closed at ~4,411.

Yes, MBBS graduates are required to complete compulsory rural service as mandated by the Tamil Nadu government. Graduates who fail to complete this obligation must pay the financial penalty specified in the service bond signed at the time of admission.
