About Government Medical College, Virudhunagar

Government Medical College, Virudhunagar is a government medical institution in Tamil Nadu, established in 2021 with classes commencing in January 2022. The college building was inaugurated by the Prime Minister of India on January 13, 2022. It is part of initiatives to expand medical education in the state, sanctioned under central government schemes. Affiliated with The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, Chennai, and approved/recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC) for admitting 150 MBBS students annually since 2021-22. Located in the Collectorate Master Plan Complex, Koorakundu Village, Virudhunagar – 626002, the campus spans about 22.4 acres for academic blocks with ultra-modern, futuristic infrastructure built at a cost of Rs. 380 crores, plus 15.07 acres for the hospital. Eco-friendly measures include bio-fencing and tree plantations. The attached Government Medical College Hospital serves as the teaching hospital with departments including General Medicine, General Surgery, Paediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Orthopaedics, Ophthalmology, ENT, Anaesthesia, Dermatology, Respiratory Medicine, Psychiatry, Radio Diagnosis, Dentistry, and Emergency Medicine. Equipped with advanced facilities like CT Scan, Ultrasonogram, ECG, Holter monitor, X-Ray, Endoscopy, Mammogram, ECHO, EEG, Bronchoscope, Central Laboratory, Blood Bank, and MRI Scan. It functions as a tertiary care center with high patient inflow, supporting programs like ICTC, RNTCP, NLEP, ART for HIV, Dengue special ward, CMCHIS special ward, and a Transgender clinic. Pre-clinical and para-clinical departments (Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Community Medicine, Forensic Medicine) are operational with labs; Forensic Medicine conducts around 360 postmortems yearly. The central library has 3000+ books and 40 journals (recent editions), four lecture halls (250 capacity each), two examination halls (~250 each), air-conditioned auditorium (1000 capacity), gymnasium, and separate hostels for boys and girls (well-ventilated rooms, mess with hygienic food, study environment, common rooms, security). 66 staff quarters are available on campus. Other courses include Diploma in Nursing (100 seats/year), DMLT, and paramedical certificate courses. Clinical exposure is strong via the attached hospital (reported capacities vary around 326-700+ beds in sources, with high OPD/IPD). Faculty includes experienced members (around 140 reported). MBBS follows Competency-Based Medical Education over 5.5 years (4.5 academic + 1-year compulsory rotating internship) with emphasis on practical training, community medicine, and rural healthcare. Admission is highly competitive via NEET UG, followed by Tamil Nadu state counselling (DME) for 85% state quota and MCC for 15% AIQ. Fees are affordable under government norms. Post-MBBS, a compulsory 5-year rural/government service bond applies (penalty Rs. 5,00,000 for non-compliance), with internship stipend of Rs. 25,000/month (standard in Tamil Nadu government colleges).
