About Government Medical College, Vizianagaram

Government Medical College, Vizianagaram is a new government medical institution established in 2023 under the AP Government's Nadu-Nedu programme (G.O.Ms.No.33/HM & FW (C1) Dept, dated 04.06.2022). Located in Vizianagaram – 535002, it is affiliated with Dr. YSR University of Health Sciences and recognized by NMC with LOP granted for 150 MBBS seats. The college is being built on a 70-acre site (Sy No. 1.89) with an estimate value of ₹500 Crores (Package-I) and plinth area of 13,99,879 sq. ft. The attached teaching hospital is Government General Hospital (GGH), Vizianagaram — a 430-bed hospital (310 beds at main Cantonment hospital + 120 beds at MCH/Gosha Hospital). The GGH was established in 1988 under APVVP, expanded from 100 to 400 beds under World Bank-aided AP First Referral Health Systems Project, and upgraded to Teaching Hospital status from 01.10.2022. Vizianagaram is located 40 km NNE of Visakhapatnam, with Vizianagaram Junction Railway Station on the Howrah–Chennai main line and Visakhapatnam Airport (48 km) as the nearest airport.
