About Government Medical College, Wayanad

Government Medical College, Wayanad is a newly established public medical institution situated in Mananthavady, the district headquarters of Wayanad in Kerala. Announced by the Government of Kerala and converted from the existing Wayanad District Hospital, it received National Medical Commission (NMC) approval for its MBBS programme and commenced its first batch of classes in October 2025. The college is affiliated with the Kerala University of Health Sciences (KUHS), Thrissur. Wayanad, established as Kerala's 12th district in 1980, is a hilly tribal region nestled on the Western Ghats, bordered by Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, and has the highest tribal population in Kerala at 18.5%. The medical college aims to bridge the long-standing healthcare gap in this underserved hilly region by offering quality medical education and clinical training through its attached district hospital. The college provides hostels for boys and girls, a library, modern classrooms, laboratories, and sports facilities. As a brand new government institution, it offers highly affordable fees for MBBS, making it accessible to students from all socioeconomic backgrounds.

The college is attached to the upgraded Wayanad District Hospital, Mananthavady, which serves as the teaching hospital for clinical training. The hospital provides inpatient, outpatient, emergency and specialty services to the tribal and rural population of Wayanad district.

GMC Wayanad was established in 2025 by the Government of Kerala by upgrading the existing Wayanad District Hospital, Mananthavady into a full-fledged medical college. The first batch of MBBS students commenced regular classes in October 2025.

GMC Wayanad has 100 MBBS seats approved by the National Medical Commission (NMC). Of these, 15 seats fall under the All India Quota (AIQ) managed by MCC/DGHS, and 85 seats are filled through Kerala State Quota counselling by CEE Kerala.

As a government medical college, the annual tuition fee at GMC Wayanad is very nominal โ€” approximately โ‚น25,000 per year as per Kerala Government norms. The total course fee for 4.5 years is around โ‚น1.25 lakh. Additional hostel and mess charges apply separately.

Admission to GMC Wayanad is through the NEET-UG examination followed by the Centralised Allotment Process (CAP) conducted by the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations (CEE), Kerala. Candidates must register on cee.kerala.gov.in, fill in their college preferences, and secure a seat based on NEET rank and category.
