Government Thanjavur Medical College (TMC/GTMC), established 1959, is one of the oldest and most prestigious government medical colleges in Tamil Nadu. Foundation stone laid 1958 by Dr. Rajendra Prasad (then President of India). Established to serve ~1 crore people in and around Thanjavur district. Affiliated with Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University; NMC recognized. 150 MBBS seats; 109 PG seats in 18 disciplines; 12 SS seats in 5 disciplines. Campus: 228 acres. Two attached hospitals: 1. Govt. TMC Hospital (TMCH) — opened 1964; now ~1,000+ beds; referral teaching hospital; 850–1,000 inpatients treated daily in addition to thousands of OPD. 2. Govt. Raja Mirasudar Hospital (RMH) — ENT, Gynaecology, Paediatrics. New ₹38-crore super-specialty block (opened June 2010): 300-bed; Neurosurgery, Neurology, Urology, Nephrology, Medical Gastroenterology, Surgical Gastroenterology, Thoracic Medicine, ENT, Cardiology, CTVS; casualty block; labs; outpatient wards. Infrastructure: lecture halls (250+ seats); exam rooms; demo rooms; seminar halls; departmental museums; well-equipped labs; huge auditorium; canteen; recreation halls. Separate hostels (boys and girls). Indoor and outdoor games. Sports facilities. E-library with internet. Faculty: 113. Hostel: ₹5,000/month. MBBS fees: first year ₹13,610. PG fee: ₹53,000/year.
