About Gujarat Adani Institute of Medical Sciences, Bhuj
Gujarat Adani Institute of Medical Sciences (GAIMS), Bhuj, is a landmark institution of medical education in the Kutch district of Gujarat. It stands as India's first Public-Private Partnership (PPP) medical college, a unique collaboration between the Government of Gujarat and the Adani Education and Research Foundation, under the umbrella of the Adani Foundation and Adani Group's Corporate Social Responsibility initiative. Established in Bhuj in 2009, GAIMS is the only medical college and multi-specialty modern teaching district hospital in the entire Kutch district, serving both the urban and rural populations of this remote but historically significant region. The genesis of GAIMS is rooted in the devastating earthquake of January 2001, which collapsed the Kutch District Hospital and G.K. General Hospital in Bhuj. In the aftermath, the Government of India decided to rebuild the hospital with the latest technology, including Base Isolation — a cutting-edge earthquake-resistant construction method. Hon'ble Chief Minister of Gujarat laid the foundation stone of the KSKV Kachchh University campus in 2004, which began academic and administrative activities in 2007-08. The PPP model was then formalized to establish GAIMS, combining governmental infrastructure support with the Adani Foundation's managerial excellence and financial commitment, resulting in a world-class medical education institution in one of Gujarat's most underserved regions. GAIMS is affiliated with Krantiguru Shyamji Krishna Verma (KSKV) Kachchh University, Bhuj, and is fully recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC) with college code BHUMED. The college holds an annual MBBS intake of 150 seats with NMC 'Recognized' status. Additionally, the NMC has granted recognition for 16 distinct MD/MS postgraduate disciplines with a total annual intake of 61 seats. The GAIMS campus is spread over 27 acres in the heart of Bhuj city. The campus is entirely modern and comprises dedicated blocks for the Medical College, Teaching Hospital (G.K. General Hospital), separate hostels for UG and PG students, and residential quarters for teaching and non-teaching staff. The academic infrastructure includes six gallery-type, air-conditioned lecture theatres — five for the medical college (LC I, LC II, LC III, LC IV each with capacity of 180 students; LC V with capacity of 375 students) and one for the hospital (LC VI with capacity of 200 students). Well-equipped pre-clinical and para-clinical laboratories, examination halls, demonstration rooms, and departmental museums are available for all 17 departments. The Central Library at GAIMS is a comprehensive academic resource centre with an area of 2,400 sq.m. It houses over 14,000 books and 110 international and national journals, a modern computer lab with 40 computers, and separate reading rooms for UG students (capacity 300+), PG students (capacity 100), and staff (capacity 40). Access to the latest online medical journals and e-books is also available. The library serves as a hub for academic research and study for both MBBS students and postgraduate residents. The attached teaching hospital — G.K. General Hospital, Bhuj — is a 750-bed multi-specialty modern hospital established as part of the PPP initiative. This hospital is the only multi-specialty tertiary facility in the entire Kutch district, making it the primary referral centre for all 50 talukas of Kutch. It provides 24x7 emergency, trauma, and critical care services. Key departments include General Medicine, General Surgery, Orthopaedics, Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, ENT, Ophthalmology, Psychiatry, Anaesthesiology, Radiology, Dermatology, Respiratory Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Burns and Plastic Surgery, Neurology, Urology, Nephrology, and Dentistry. Special services include NICU, PICU, ICU, Dialysis, Blood Bank, and a fully equipped pharmacy. Diagnostic services include NABL-accredited laboratory services for Biochemistry, Pathology, Microbiology, and Haematology, and an advanced radiology department with CT scan, MRI, USG, and X-ray. For MBBS, the admission is through NEET-UG with 127 Government Quota seats (0 AIQ, 127 Govt. Quota), 0 MQ seats, and 23 NRI seats, totalling 150 seats. Fee for the Government Quota is Rs.8.70 Lakhs/year, Management Quota is Rs.18.55 Lakhs/year, and NRI Quota is $30,000/year, as per the official Medical Colleges Seat Intake and Tuition Fees 2024-25 document. Admissions are processed through ACPUGMEC (Gujarat state counselling) for state quota and MCC for AIQ. Post-MBBS, graduates must complete compulsory rural service as per the Gujarat government bond conditions. For postgraduate studies, GAIMS offers 16 MD/MS courses with 61 total seats, admitted through NEET-PG via MCC (50% AIQ) and ACPPGMEC (50% State Quota). PG residents receive a monthly stipend as per Gujarat state government norms — reported at Rs.87,500 per month for 3rd-year residents. The PG program offers clinical and academic exposure that is unique given the hospital's position as the sole tertiary care centre in Kutch, ensuring diverse case exposure including complex trauma, occupational diseases, and endemic conditions. GAIMS has an impressive student rating of 4.39 on Shiksha, with ratings of 4.38 for Campus Life, 4.50 for Placements, 4.38 for Faculty, and 4.44 for Infrastructure. The college fosters a lively campus culture with cultural fests, quizzes, sporting events, and health awareness programs. The hostel rooms offer single bed with mattress and study table. Separate hostels for male and female UG students, interns, and PG residents are provided. Educational loans are available through Central Bank of India and Kalupur Commercial Co-operative Bank. The college is 4.6 km from Bhuj Railway Station and 8.6 km from Bhuj Airport, making it well-connected despite its location in the remote Kutch district.

GAIMS is India's first Public-Private Partnership (PPP) medical college — a unique collaboration between the Government of Gujarat and the Adani Education and Research Foundation (part of Adani Foundation). The government provides land, hospital infrastructure, and regulatory support, while Adani Foundation manages operations, provides managerial expertise, and funds CSR initiatives. This model ensures world-class infrastructure and management quality at a regulated government fee, making it more affordable than purely private colleges while being better resourced than many purely government institutions.
GAIMS is the only medical college and multi-specialty modern teaching hospital in the entire Kutch district of Gujarat. G.K. General Hospital (750 beds) attached to GAIMS serves as the sole tertiary care referral centre for all 50 talukas of Kutch, serving both rural and urban populations across this vast district. This means students and PG residents get exposure to a wide variety of cases including trauma (road accidents in remote areas), endemic diseases, occupational health issues from the industrial belt, complex surgical cases, and the full spectrum of emergency and elective medicine.
