About Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences, Hassan

Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences (HIMS), Hassan is a reputed autonomous government medical institution established in 2006 by the Government of Karnataka under the Department of Medical Education. It is one of the earliest district-level government medical colleges set up by Karnataka to strengthen medical education and healthcare in the southern Karnataka region — particularly serving the people of Hassan, Kodagu, Chikmagalur, Tumkur, and surrounding districts. HIMS is affiliated with Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS), Bengaluru and approved by the National Medical Commission (NMC). The college is spread over a lush green 58-acre campus at Sri Chamarajendra Hospital Campus, Krishnaraja Pura, Hassan — 573201. The campus features an administrative block with well-ventilated classrooms, 4 modernised lecture halls, equipped examination hall, demonstration hall, and dissection hall. The library spans 1,718 sq.ft. with a seating capacity of 506 students, 8,594+ medical books, Indian and foreign journals, and a digital library. HIMS currently admits 150 MBBS students per year and offers PG (MD/MS) programmes across 20 specialties (43 PG seats in 14 disciplines). The attached teaching hospital is Sri Chamarajendra (SC) Hospital, Hassan — a 750+ bedded multi-specialty government hospital that is a major referral centre for the entire Hassan district and surrounding areas, providing high clinical exposure with 1,500+ daily OPD patients. The hospital has major tie-ups with corporate entities and TPAs for cashless services and is equipped with best-in-class infrastructure and 24×7 on-campus super-specialists for emergency services. HIMS is well-connected by road and rail — Hassan is located ~187 km from Bengaluru, ~117 km from Mysuru, ~129 km from Mangaluru, and approximately 106 km from Mysore Airport (MYQ). It is the only government medical college in Hassan district. The college has 147+ faculty members and works with the vision of establishing itself as a centre of excellence in medical education, research, and healthcare services at the national and international level, providing comprehensive, culturally sensitive, community-oriented care.
