Indian Institute of Information Technology Agartala (IIIT Agartala) is an Institute of National Importance established in 2018 under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model by the Government of India, Government of Tripura, ONGC (Oil and Natural Gas Corporation), and NEEPCO (North Eastern Electric Power Corporation). The institute was conferred the status of an Institute of National Importance and currently operates from a temporary campus at NIT Agartala, Jirania, with a permanent 52-acre campus planned at Bodhjungnagar, Tripura. Being located in Agartala — the capital of Tripura and a gateway to northeast India — IIIT Agartala holds special importance for developing IT education in a region that has historically been underserved in terms of technical institutions. The institute is mentored by NIT Agartala, which provides access to established infrastructure including classrooms, laboratories, hostels, a library, sports facilities, and the NIT Agartala campus ecosystem. IIIT Agartala currently offers a B.Tech programme in Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) with a total intake of 100 seats (80 gender-neutral + 20 female supernumerary) as per JoSAA 2025. The institute also offers M.Tech programmes in relevant disciplines, with GATE-qualified students receiving HTRA stipends of Rs. 12,400 per month as Teaching Assistants. PhD programmes are available with monthly fellowships ranging from Rs. 31,000 to Rs. 58,000 under JRF/SRF schemes. Placement outcomes at IIIT Agartala have shown remarkable growth. In 2025, the highest placement package was Rs. 60 LPA (compared to Rs. 26.5 LPA in 2024), and the average package was Rs. 18.33 LPA (compared to Rs. 10.9 LPA in 2024), representing an extraordinary improvement. Earlier, the institute recorded 100% placement rate for its first batch in 2022 and approximately 87% in 2023. Major recruiters include Amazon, TCS, Capgemini, Deloitte, and various IT companies. The JEE Main closing rank for CSE at IIIT Agartala in 2025 (JoSAA R6) was 44,304 for the General category. The institute leverages NIT Agartala's extensive student facility infrastructure, including cultural zones, library, gymnasium, and sports facilities. The scholarship ecosystem is strong with SC/ST students receiving full tuition fee waivers, and students from families with income below Rs. 1 lakh eligible for complete tuition fee exemption.
