Indian Institute of Information Technology Bhagalpur (IIIT Bhagalpur) is an Institute of National Importance established in 2017 under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model by the Government of India (50%), Government of Bihar (35%), and BELTRON (15%). The institute was formally dedicated to the nation by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 20th February 2024. Located on the southern banks of the sacred river Ganges in Bhagalpur — Bihar's third largest city known as 'Silk City' — IIIT Bhagalpur occupies a 50-acre permanent campus carved from the BCE Bhagalpur campus, fully operational since April 2024. The institute started its first academic session on 1st August 2017 and has since grown into a significant technical institution. Bhagalpur itself is a city of historical importance and is listed for development under the Smart City programme, a joint venture between Government and industry. The institute's permanent campus on the banks of the Ganga provides a scenic and serene environment conducive to focused academic work. IIIT Bhagalpur offers four B.Tech programmes: Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) with 150 seats, Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) with 75 seats, Mechatronics and Automation Engineering (MAE) with 60 seats, and Mathematics and Computing (M&C) with 27 seats — totalling 312 gender-neutral seats plus 32 supernumerary female-only seats (376 total) as per JoSAA 2025. The B.Tech in Mechatronics and Automation Engineering is particularly unique, combining mechanical engineering, electronics, and computing — making IIIT Bhagalpur distinctive among its IIIT peers. The institute is an AICTE-recognised QIP Centre for M.Tech and PhD programmes. Placement outcomes at IIIT Bhagalpur have shown impressive growth. In 2025, 172 students were placed from 203 eligible with 221 total offers (two international), achieving a placement rate of approximately 85%. The highest package was Rs. 83 LPA and average was Rs. 10.35 LPA with a median of Rs. 9 LPA. In 2024, CSE recorded highest Rs. 39 LPA, average Rs. 11.17 LPA; ECE highest Rs. 20 LPA, average Rs. 7.16 LPA; MAE highest Rs. 9 LPA, average Rs. 4.62 LPA. Top recruiters include Amazon, Nykaa, National Instruments, Cimpress, Google, IBM, Adobe, Infoedge, TCS, and Cognizant. The institute's Career Development Cell ensures students are industry-ready through training programs and internships. Campus facilities include an extensive library, sports complex (football, cricket, badminton, gym), separate hostels for boys and girls with non-AC rooms, well-equipped labs, and 24×7 security. Student life is supported by Technical, Cultural, and Sports boards, and clubs covering diverse interests. More than 80% of students who applied for scholarships received them in the previous year.
