Indian Institute of Information Technology Surat (IIIT Surat) is an Institute of National Importance established in 2017 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India under a not-for-profit Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. The institute was conferred Institute of National Importance (INI) status on February 5, 2020 under the IIIT (PPP) Act 2017. It is a collaborative venture involving the Government of India (50%), the Government of Gujarat (35%), and industry partners — Gujarat Narmada Valley Fertilisers & Chemicals (GNFC), Gujarat Gas Limited (GGL), and Gujarat Informatics Limited (GIL) (combined 15%). Under the directorship of Prof. Rajeev Shorey (since June 12, 2024), IIIT Surat is committed to building a globally competitive centre of excellence in Computer Science and Technology. Since September 2022, the institute has been operating from its own permanent academic facility on a 28.71-acre campus in Kholvad, Kamrej, Surat, strategically located near National Highway No. 48 (Mumbai–New Delhi). The campus is 15 km from Surat Railway Station and Interstate Bus Terminus and approximately 32 km from Surat Airport. Prior to September 2022, the institute operated from the campus of Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology (SVNIT), Surat, which mentored IIIT Surat during its formative years. IIIT Surat offers B.Tech programmes in Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) — 100 seats (Gender-Neutral: 80 + Female Supernumerary: 20), Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) — 75 seats (Gender-Neutral: 60 + Female Supernumerary: 15), CSE with specialisation in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning — 30 seats (Gender-Neutral: 24 + Female Supernumerary: 6), and CSE with specialisation in Cyber Security — 30 seats (Gender-Neutral: 24 + Female Supernumerary: 6). This totals 235 seats as per the JoSAA 2025 seat matrix. The institute's JoSAA institute code is 324. The institute expanded its academic programmes by introducing the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) programme in 2022 in CSE and ECE disciplines, and the Master of Technology (M.Tech.) programme in 2025 in specialisations of Artificial Intelligence & Data Science and VLSI Design (via GATE/CCMT). The B.Tech total programme fee is Rs. 8,32,500 (tuition Rs. 86,250 per semester × 8 = Rs. 6,90,000 plus one-time charges in first semester). Hostel fee ranges from Rs. 51,000 to Rs. 86,000 per year depending on room type. Placement outcomes have been consistently improving. In 2024, a total of 53 students were placed out of 76 registered (70% placement rate), with the highest package of Rs. 64 LPA (offered by Uber, off-campus) and average of Rs. 12.95 LPA. In 2023, the highest CSE package was Rs. 24.19 LPA with an average of Rs. 14.21 LPA and 70% overall placement rate. Top recruiters include Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Uber, Motive, Mathworks, Oracle, Rubrik, Adobe, Samsung, GEP, Deloitte, and American Express. The Training and Placement Cell facilitates 6-month industry internships, mock interviews, GD sessions, and pre-placement talks. Research collaborations include MoUs with ISRO, MediaTek Inc. (Taiwan), ITMO University (Russia), and Bosch Global Software Technology. Student clubs include Google Developer Student Club (GDSC), Learn Code Solve (LCS), Free Open-Source Software (FOSS), Ruminate E-Cell (entrepreneurship), MARC Robotics Club, and the Indominus Sports Club. Annual cultural festivals include Spring Fiesta and SARAS. The institute is located in Surat — one of India's fastest-growing, cleanest cities, known for diamonds and textiles, with excellent rail and road connectivity.
