Indian Institute of Information Technology, Design and Manufacturing, Kancheepuram (IIITDM Kancheepuram) is a premier Institute of National Importance established in 2007 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (now Ministry of Education), Government of India. Situated on a 51.75-acre fully residential campus on the outskirts of Chennai off the Vandalur-Kelambakkam Road, IIITDM Kancheepuram was accorded the status of an Institute of National Importance in July 2011. The institute was established with a specialized mandate: to promote design and manufacturing-oriented engineering education and research, thereby strengthening India's competitive advantage in global product markets. The academic curriculum at IIITDM Kancheepuram is distinctly interdisciplinary, blending Computer Science, Electronics and Communication Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering with design thinking and manufacturing knowledge. A hallmark of the institute's academic approach is the integration of Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) concepts, encompassing design ideation, digital visualization, hands-on prototyping in hobby workshops, and team-based product development projects. The institute offers B.Tech programmes in Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering (with specialization in Design and Manufacturing), Mechanical Engineering (with specialization in Design and Manufacturing), Smart Manufacturing, and an exclusive Interdisciplinary B.Tech+M.Tech in Product Design – a programme unique to IIITDM institutes in India. At the postgraduate level, the institute offers M.Tech in multiple specializations including Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, Microelectronics and VLSI Design, and several others, along with M.Des and Ph.D. programmes. Admissions to B.Tech are conducted through JoSAA/CSAB counselling based on JEE Main scores. M.Tech admissions require valid GATE scores via CCMT counselling. The institute's campus features dedicated academic labs, a central library with an extensive collection of books and international journals, a well-equipped auditorium, separate hostels for boys and girls with Wi-Fi, washing machines, hot water, 24/7 security, and a central mess. A Teaching Learning Centre (TLC) established under the Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya National Mission funded by MHRD supports innovative design and manufacturing pedagogy. Sports facilities include a cricket ground, football pitch, basketball, lawn tennis, volleyball, table tennis, and badminton courts along with a gymnasium. Student clubs such as the Quiz Club, Robotics Club, IDC Club, Dance Club, Electronics Club, Creators Club, and Coding Club enrich campus life. IIITDM Kancheepuram students have achieved global recognition: the Mars Rover (MaRS) club secured 3rd rank in Asia and 6th rank worldwide in the European Rover Challenge. The institute also collaborates with private organizations like Saint-Gobain for merit scholarships. In the 2025 placement drive, 198 offers were made to students, with the highest package at INR 32.57 LPA and an average of INR 10.20 LPA. Top recruiters include Flipkart, Google, Infosys, TCS, HCL Tech, XCOM Labs, and MAQ Software. NIRF Rankings 2025 placed IIITDM Kancheepuram in the 151–200 band in the Engineering category. QS Asia Rankings 2026 placed it at 312 under the Southern Asia category.
