About Indian Institute of Technology (Banaras Hindu University) Varanasi
Indian Institute of Technology (Banaras Hindu University) Varanasi, widely known as IIT (BHU) or IIT BHU, is one of India's most historic and prestigious technical institutions. Its origins trace back to 1919, when Bharat Ratna Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya, the founder of Banaras Hindu University, established the Banaras Engineering College (BENCO). By 1923 the College of Mining and Metallurgy (MINMET) was added, followed by the College of Technology (TECHNO) in 1932. These three merged in 1968 to form the Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University (IT-BHU), which was admitting students through the IIT-JEE since 1972. On June 29, 2012, IT-BHU was officially designated as an Indian Institute of Technology by an Act of Parliament — the 16th IIT in India. The institute celebrated its centenary in 2019. Uniquely positioned within the sprawling 1,300-acre campus of Banaras Hindu University along the banks of the Ganga in Varanasi, IIT (BHU) offers a rare campus experience combining one of India's most ancient cities with the academic rigour of the IIT system. Students benefit from BHU's world-class central library, Indo-Gothic architecture, hospital (Sri Sunderlal Hospital), and diverse campus culture, while IIT (BHU) remains fully autonomous. Academically, IIT (BHU) houses 16 departments, 4 interdisciplinary schools, and a Humanities and Social Sciences section. It offers B.Tech (4-year, 10 specializations, sanctioned intake ~1,102 seats), B.Arch (5-year), Integrated Dual Degree — IDD (5-year, B.Tech + M.Tech in 14 disciplines), M.Tech (2-year, 40+ specializations), M.Pharm, M.Sc (Chemistry, Physics, Mathematical Sciences), and PhD programs. IIT (BHU) is the only IIT in India offering B.Tech in Pharmaceutical Engineering and Technology, Ceramic Engineering, and Mining Engineering. In NIRF 2025, IIT (BHU) ranks 10th in Engineering, 31st Overall, and 22nd in Research Institutions. Internationally it ranks 566th in QS World University Rankings 2026. The PARAM SHIVAY Supercomputing Centre — inaugurated by PM Narendra Modi in 2019 — was India's first supercomputer under the National Supercomputing Mission. In 2024-25, the institute achieved a 92.33% B.Tech placement rate with 1,416 total offers including 297 PPOs. The highest package reached INR 2.2 Crore (2024-25), average B.Tech package INR 23.49 LPA. Over 350 companies participated including Google, Microsoft, Amazon, NVIDIA, Goldman Sachs, Qualcomm, Uber, ZS Associates, and Tata Steel. The Department of Mathematical Sciences recorded 100% placements with a median of INR 35 LPA in 2024.
