About Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati
Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT Guwahati or IITG) is a premier public technical university established in 1994 by an Act of Parliament, with academic programs commencing in 1995. Situated on the picturesque north bank of the mighty Brahmaputra River in Amingaon, North Guwahati, Assam, IITG is the sixth Indian Institute of Technology to be established in India and is officially recognized as an Institute of National Importance by the Government of India. The institute's founding traces its roots to the 1985 Assam Accord, which specifically mandated the establishment of an IIT to improve educational facilities in the northeastern region of India. The campus of IIT Guwahati is spread across a sprawling 700-acre (approximately 285 hectares) plot of land, offering a stunning natural backdrop with the Brahmaputra on one side and forested hills and serene lakes on the others. The campus is widely regarded as one of the most scenic and beautiful university campuses in India. It is a fully residential campus, housing all of its approximately 8,400 students — including about 30% PhD scholars and a growing number of international students — in well-maintained hostel facilities named after rivers and tributaries of Northeast India. Academically, IIT Guwahati offers more than 160 programs spanning undergraduate (B.Tech, B.Des, B.S.), postgraduate (M.Tech, M.Des, M.Sc, M.A, MBA, M.S. by Research), dual degree, and doctoral (PhD) levels across 12 engineering disciplines and several science, design, humanities, and management departments. Admission to the flagship B.Tech program is based on JEE Advanced scores followed by JoSAA counselling. Postgraduate admissions are through GATE (M.Tech), CAT (MBA), IIT JAM (M.Sc), UCEED (B.Des), CEED (M.Des), and UGC-CSIR-NET (PhD). Total tuition fees for the 4-year B.Tech program stand at approximately INR 8 lakh. IIT Guwahati has consistently ranked among the top engineering institutions in India. In NIRF Rankings 2025, it secured 8th in Engineering, 10th in Research, and 11th Overall. In NIRF 2024, it ranked 7th in Engineering and 9th Overall. Internationally, IIT Guwahati holds the 334th rank in QS World University Rankings 2026 and has ranked 32nd globally in 'Research Citations per Faculty' in QS rankings. Its subjects in Data Science and Petroleum Engineering have featured among the global top 100 in QS World University Rankings by Subject. The institute boasts a world-class academic infrastructure housed in a 74,000 sq. meter academic complex. This includes state-of-the-art research laboratories, the Lakshminath Bezbaroa Central Library — a four-storey fully air-conditioned building housing over 2 lakh books and digital resources — a 24/7 Computer and Communication Centre with a PARAM supercomputing cluster, a modern Lecture Hall Complex with four 250-seat halls and a 1,500-seat auditorium, and dedicated Centers of Excellence for Nanotechnology, Artificial Intelligence, Energy, and Sustainable Development. A Central Instruments Facility (CIF) with 26 advanced instruments serves 11 academic departments and 38 external institutes.
