About Indian Institute of Technology Tirupati
Indian Institute of Technology Tirupati (IIT Tirupati or IITTP) holds the proud distinction of being the first among the third-generation IITs announced in 2014 to have its foundation stone laid — on 28 March 2015 — making it a pioneer of India's newest wave of premier technical institutions. Established under the Ministry of Education, Government of India, and declared an Institute of National Importance under the Institutes of Technology Act, IIT Tirupati was created specifically in response to the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh in 2014. The institute began academic operations on 5 August 2015 from a temporary campus, with strong mentorship support from IIT Madras. The permanent campus of IIT Tirupati is located in Merlapaka Village along the Yerpedu–Venkatagiri Highway (NH 565), approximately 22 km from Tirupati city center and just 14 km from Tirupati International Airport. Spanning 548.3 acres at the scenic foothills of the Seshachalam Hills, the campus is a masterwork of sustainable design. The North Campus (Stage 1C) was fully completed in December 2023 with all operations shifted there from January 2024. Academic facilities include two academic blocks (AB-1 and AB-2) with faculty offices, research and teaching laboratories, classrooms, a Central Instrumentation Facility (CIF), a Lecture Hall Complex (LHC) with eight 60-seater and one 120-seater classrooms, and a 120-seat virtual classroom with video conferencing capability. The hostel zone houses two hostels with 1,000 rooms total. IIT Tirupati currently has 9 academic departments: Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Humanities and Social Sciences, Mathematics and Computing, Mechanical Engineering, and Physics. The institute offers B.Tech (6 specializations), M.Tech (5 specializations), M.Sc (3 science disciplines), MS by Research, PhD, and the uniquely distinctive Master of Public Policy (MPP) program — making IIT Tirupati one of the very few IITs in India to offer a public policy postgraduate degree. A defining strategic advantage of IIT Tirupati is its location. The campus is situated near multiple national knowledge and technology assets: IISER Tirupati's permanent campus is under 3 km away; the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SHAR/ISRO) at Sriharikota is nearby. In 2026, IIT Tirupati, IISER Tirupati, and Dalhousie University (Canada) announced the formation of the Tirupati Tri-Institutional Global Innovation Campus — a landmark international academic collaboration.
