Institute of Engineering & Rural Technology (IERT), Prayagraj, is one of the most prestigious and historically significant technical institutions in India. Started in 1955 as a Civil Engineering School by the 'Institute of Engineering & Technology' society (with Late Shanker Saran as President and Late Vishwamitra as Secretary), it holds the distinction of being the first polytechnic to be started in Asia. In 1962, the Uttar Pradesh Government took over the institute, constituting a registered society named 'Allahabad Polytechnic, Allahabad' with a Managing Committee of 11 members. The state government awarded grant-in-aid status. In 1982, after reviewing its achievements, the U.P. Government renamed it 'Institute of Engineering and Rural Technology (IERT)' and awarded Academic Autonomy. The Engineering Degree Division of IERT was established in 2001 as a government-aided self-finance institute, affiliated with Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University (AKTU), Lucknow. IERT offers B.Tech in seven disciplines: Civil Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Industrial & Production Engineering, Instrumentation & Control Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. The campus spans 26.5 acres of land with separate hostel and mess facilities for boys and girls including 24-hour generator facility, telephone, and other necessary amenities. The college has well-equipped labs with modern equipment. The computer lab has latest computers, software and application development tools. The sizable library has a huge collection of books on engineering and various other subjects. IERT offers B.Tech admission for session 2025-26 in Electronics Engg, Mechanical Engg, Instrumentation & Control Engg, Industrial & Production Engg, Electrical Engg, and Civil Engg branches through JEE Main (45% at Intermediate, 40% for SC/ST). Lateral entry is available through UPCUET 2025 for diploma/B.Sc. (Math) holders with 45% marks. The Placement Cell maintains strong industry connections with companies including L&T, Maruti Suzuki, HCL, Accenture, Infosys, and Tata Power.
