About Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Belgaum
Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC), Belagavi is one of India's most prestigious and historic private medical institutions, established in 1963 by the Karnataka Lingayat Education (KLE) Society in response to an acute shortage of medical facilities in the North Karnataka and South Maharashtra region. Founded under the vision of the Founder Dean, Late Dr. B.S. Jirge, and guided by eminent medical educationists over six decades, JNMC today stands as an internationally acclaimed Centre of Excellence in medical education, research, and healthcare. It is the flagship constituent college of the KLE Academy of Higher Education & Research (KAHER) — a Deemed-to-be-University established on 13th April 2006, recognized by UGC under Section 3 of the UGC Act. JNMC was previously affiliated with RGUHS; it now awards its own KAHER degrees. The college is approved by the NMC, recognized by the Malaysian Medical Council, and listed in the WHO World Directory of Medical Schools. It has received research funding from ICMR, WHO, and the National Institutes of Health (NIH), USA. A landmark collaboration with the University of Illinois at Chicago, USA was established in 1999, with further MoUs with international institutions for research and teaching. JNMC is NAAC-'A' Grade accredited (2nd Cycle), and KAHER holds NAAC A+ and Category-'A' (MHRD); ranked 2nd by Karnataka K-SURF. JNMC is ranked #46 by NIRF 2025, #51 by IIRF 2024, and #39 by India Today 2025 in the medical category. It is consistently among the top 5 medical colleges in Karnataka and top 25 in India. The 100-acre, lush green, eco-friendly Nehru Nagar Campus is 3 km from Belagavi city centre and approximately 12.2 km from Belagavi Airport (IXG). The campus features 11 academic buildings, a convention centre with 4 auditoriums, an Olympic-size swimming pool, wood-floored badminton courts, tennis court, basketball ground, a full stadium, modern gymnasium, and 13 hostels (4 boys + 5 girls + NRI + others). JNMC offers 200 MBBS seats, PG courses in 21 departments (217+ PG seats), and Super-Specialty (DM/M.Ch) courses in 11 departments. The two teaching hospitals — Dr. Prabhakar Kore Charitable Hospital (PKCH, 1,000-bed free charitable block) and KLE Dr. Prabhakar Kore Hospital & Medical Research Centre (KLE MRC, 1,450+ bedded corporate super-specialty hospital on 18 acres) — collectively provide 2,400+ teaching beds and serve 2,500+ outpatients daily with 2,500+ staff, 350+ doctors, 267 ICU beds, and 20 hi-tech operation theatres.
