About Karwar Institute of Medical Sciences, Karwar
Karwar Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS), Karwar is an autonomous government medical college established in 2016 by the Government of Karnataka under the Department of Medical Education. It is the only medical college in Uttara Kannada (North Canara) district — the only district medical college serving a vast coastal and forested region bordering Goa to the north and the Western Ghats to the east. KIMS is affiliated with Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS), Bengaluru and approved by the National Medical Commission (NMC) for 150 MBBS seats annually. PG (MD/MS) courses have also been approved. The college occupies the largest building in Karwar — a modern, architecturally impressive 7-floor structure on MG Road, Kodibag, within the District Hospital premises — set against the stunning backdrop of the Arabian Sea to the west and the Western Ghats to the east. The campus has spacious, air-conditioned lecture halls (150-seat capacity each), a well-stocked library open to all students, a demonstration room, an examination hall, NMC-compliant departmental laboratories, and separate hostels for boys and girls with basic amenities (3 per room), 24×7 security, a common dining hall, and staff residential quarters. The attached teaching hospital — the Government District Hospital, Karwar — is a 400-bed multi-specialty facility providing clinical training across Medicine, Surgery, Paediatrics, Orthopaedics, Dermatology, Psychiatry, Radiodiagnosis, ENT, Ophthalmology, Anaesthesiology, Physiotherapy, and Forensic Medicine departments. KIMS also runs healthcare service programmes including free medical camps, health awareness programmes, and health education outreach for economically weaker sections of society in coastal Karnataka. The college is in the picturesque city of Karwar, administrative headquarters of Uttara Kannada district — known for INS Kadamba (the largest naval base in India, home port of the Western Fleet), its pristine beaches, the Kalinadi estuary, Devbagh island, and proximity to Goa (~96 km from Dabolim Airport). Karwar is well-connected by Konkan Railway — 2 km from Karwar Railway Station, making it highly accessible for students from Kerala, Goa, Maharashtra, and other coastal states. KIMS was the least preferred Karnataka Government Medical College in NEET 2021 due to being newly established, a trend which has improved with successive batches. KIMS student stipend during internship is ₹30,000/month. During NEET 2021–2024, 3 candidates received allotment at KIMS Karwar.
