About Kodagu Institute of Medical Sciences, Kodagu
Kodagu Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS Kodagu / KoIMS), Madikeri, is a fully autonomous government medical college established in 2016 by the Government of Karnataka, located in the scenic hill town of Madikeri — the district headquarters of Kodagu (Coorg), often called the 'Scotland of India'. The college is affiliated with Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS), Bengaluru, and is approved by the National Medical Commission (NMC) and Indian Nursing Council (INC). KIMS Kodagu offers 150 NMC-approved MBBS seats, as well as MD/MS postgraduate courses in 15 specialties and BSc Nursing. The 22-acre campus features three-floor college buildings covering 42,910 sq.m., with 2 lecture theatres (180-seat capacity each) and 1 larger lecture theatre (280-seat capacity), separate common rooms for boys and girls, a Central Library (700 sq.m.) with a stack room, inside reading room and outside reading room (75-seat capacity each), NMC-compliant departmental laboratories, departmental museums, and a spacious playground. The hospital and residential/hostel complex spans over 16,000 sq.m. The attached teaching hospital — the Kodagu District Hospital, Madikeri — is a 319+ bedded multi-specialty facility offering 24×7 emergency services, ICU, Blood Bank, and comprehensive clinical specialties including General Medicine, Paediatrics, Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Orthopaedics, Dermatology, ENT, Ophthalmology, Anaesthesiology, Radiodiagnosis, Psychiatry, and Community Medicine. The hospital has major tie-ups with corporate entities and TPAs for cashless services, and on-campus super specialists available 24×7 for emergency care. KIMS Kodagu has 78+ faculty members and provides MBBS internship stipend of ₹30,000/month. Total MBBS tuition for 4.5 academic years is approximately ₹3.03 lakhs at government rates. During NEET 2021–2024, 7 candidates received AIQ allotment at KIMS Kodagu. The college is the only medical institution in the entire Kodagu district — a lush coffee-growing and tourism destination bordered by the Western Ghats, home to tiger reserves, colonial heritage, and the legendary Coorg community. Being located in one of India's most picturesque environments at an altitude of ~1,000–1,500m provides an exceptionally peaceful and cool academic atmosphere unique among Karnataka government medical colleges.
