About Lady Hardinge Medical College
Lady Hardinge Medical College (LHMC), New Delhi holds a unique and irreplaceable place in Indian medical history — it is the only all-women undergraduate medical college in India, and one of the oldest government medical institutions in the country. The college was conceived by Lady Hardinge of Penhurst, wife of the then Viceroy of India, with a vision to overcome the orthodox resistance against educating women in co-educational colleges during colonial India. She personally raised funds from the Princely States and the public to establish it. The foundation stone was laid by Lady Hardinge on 17th March 1914 — meant to commemorate the visit of Queen Mary to India in 1911-12 (initially named 'Queen Mary College & Hospital'). The institution was formally opened by Lord Hardinge in February 1916. Tragically, Lady Hardinge died before the college became operational — it was named in her memory. The college became part of the Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of Delhi in 1950. In February 1978, management was taken over by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) under an Act of Parliament. Today, LHMC is fully funded by the Government of India and is one of Delhi's most prestigious medical colleges. It is affiliated with University of Delhi and recognised by NMC with an annual MBBS intake of 200 female students. LHMC has two teaching hospitals: Smt. Sucheta Kriplani Hospital (877 beds) and Kalawati Saran Children's Hospital (350 beds), together providing 1,227 beds of multi-specialty care at Central Delhi. Smt. Sucheta Kriplani Hospital has, since 1991, also accepted male patients. LHMC offers MBBS (200 seats), MD/MS in 26 disciplines (167 seats), MDS (62 seats), DM/M.Ch super-specialty (8 seats in 2 disciplines), B.Sc (Hons.) Nursing (100 seats), and various diploma courses. The campus is situated in the prime DIZ Area near Connaught Place — the geographical heart of New Delhi — offering students unparalleled access to India's capital. Students confirm the location is extraordinary: 'Location is in Connaught Place, so pleasing to take a walk outside. Interns can randomly make plans and enjoy fine clubs and cafes. Late night visits to India Gate at night.' The LHMC campus has beautiful greenery — 'lots of greenery outside your window no matter where your room is in hostel premises.' The Microbiology department is a WHO Collaborating Centre for reference and training in streptococcal diseases (South East Asia). India's first ART centre for children was started at LHMC in 2007. LHMC has consistently ranked among India's top 10–32 medical colleges: NIRF rank 32 (2025), India Today rank 9 (2024).

Placement Highlights 2024
LHMC does not have a formal placement cell — 'Lady Hardinge Medical College doesn't provide jobs. As such there are no placement interviews and campus selections' (Collegebrowser). Average package: ₹6–7 LPA (SelectYourUniversity). Median MBBS placement: ₹1 LPA per NIRF 2023 (notably low — most graduates pursue PG or government service rather than immediate private practice). Median PG (3-year) placement 2022: ₹1.2 LPA per NIRF (again, reflects post-PG Senior Resident pathway rather than immediate private hospital employment). Senior Residents post-PG receive ₹95,000/month with ₹2,000/month annual increment. Career pathways: (1) PG at top institutions via NEET PG (strong institutional culture); (2) Government service as Central/Delhi Government medical officer; (3) CGHS/ESIC/Railways hospital joining; (4) Private hospital consultant post-super-specialty.
