About Medical College, Baroda

Medical College, Baroda — popularly known as GMC Baroda or Baroda Medical College (BMC) — is one of Gujarat's oldest and most prestigious government medical institutions. Established on 16 June 1949, the college was envisioned by His Highness Sir Sayajirao Gaekwad III and formally founded under Maharaja Pratapsingh Gaekwad, with the foundation stone laid in 1946. The inaugural batch comprised 40 MBBS students, and the college was inaugurated by Dr. M.D.D. Guilder, Health Minister of Bombay State. Today, GMC Baroda has grown into a comprehensive medical institution spread across 36 acres in the heart of Vadodara, admitting 250 MBBS students every year alongside 176 postgraduate medical students across 22 disciplines. The college is affiliated with the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda and is approved by the National Medical Commission (NMC) of India. Its degrees are recognized by both the Medical Council of India and the General Medical Council of Britain — a distinction that underscores the institution's global academic standing. The college is inextricably linked to the Sir Sayajirao General (SSG) Hospital, one of Gujarat's largest government hospitals with over 1,500 beds. The SSG Hospital traces its origins to the Countess of Dufferin Hospital established in 1865, which was acquired by the Government of Gujarat in 1907 and renamed in honor of Maharaja Sayajirao II. The hospital is architecturally notable for its Indo-Saracen design. Medical students benefit from extraordinary clinical exposure — managing over 290 emergencies per day, processing more than 2,000 lab tests daily, and undertaking 142 weeks of clinical rotations across all major departments. Academically, the college offers programs spanning MBBS at the undergraduate level; MD (Doctor of Medicine) and MS (Master of Surgery) across 22 disciplines at the postgraduate level; M.Sc in medical sciences across 5 fields; and M.Ch (Plastic Surgery) at the super-speciality level. The MBBS program spans 5.5 years including a one-year compulsory rotating internship. All admissions are strictly merit-based through NEET UG (MBBS), NEET PG (MD/MS/Diploma), and NEET SS (M.Ch). The faculty strength at GMC Baroda is approximately 318 members across departments including Anatomy, Anaesthesiology, Biochemistry, Dentistry, Emergency Medicine, Forensic Medicine, General Surgery, Immuno-Haematology & Blood Transfusion, Medicine, Microbiology, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedics, Otorhinolaryngology (ENT), Preventive & Social Medicine, Pathology, Paediatrics, Pharmacology, Physiology, Plastic Surgery, Psychiatry, Pulmonary Medicine, Radiology, Radiation Oncology, and Skin & VD. The college has produced globally acclaimed alumni, including Dr. Jatin P. Shah (Chair in Head & Neck Oncology, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center), Dr. Nikhil C. Munshi (Harvard Medical School professor, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, 2010 Dr. B.C. Roy Awardee), and Dr. Lalita Ramakrishnan (Professor of Immunology, University of Cambridge). The campus infrastructure includes six air-conditioned lecture theatres (LC I with 750 seats serving as auditorium, LC II with 350 seats, LC III–V with 240 seats each, LC VI with 300 seats). The Medical College Library, established in 1949 and housed in a dedicated two-floor building of 4,000 sq.m. (since 1990), contains thousands of books, journals and digital databases, with a 500-seat UG reading hall, 80-seat PG reading room, and 50-seat staff reading room. Hostel facilities include 225 UG rooms (2–3 sharing), 24 intern rooms, 353 PG/resident rooms (1–2 sharing), and 254 nursing staff beds, plus residential quarters for 52 teaching and 48 non-teaching staff. Recreation facilities include music room, TV room, indoor games, and separate outdoor playgrounds for boys and girls. Vadodara is one of Gujarat's most affordable and student-friendly cities, with monthly living costs ranging from INR 3,000–6,000 including hostel and mess. The MBBS tuition fee is approximately INR 25,000/year — among the lowest in India for a government medical college of this caliber. Graduates consistently perform well in NEET PG examinations, with an estimated 85% placement rate. Top recruiters include AIIMS campuses, Fortis Healthcare, Apollo Hospitals, and government hospitals across Gujarat.
