Admission to MD Psychiatry at NIMHANS is based on the INI CET (Institute of National Importance Combined Entrance Test), conducted by AIIMS New Delhi. It is held twice a year for January and July sessions. The INI CET July 2026 exam is scheduled for May 16, 2026, with registration closing April 25, 2026. For the July 2025 session, the MD Psychiatry closing rank for General AI category was 306 (Round 1).

NIMHANS has multiple named hostels for both male and female students: Bhadra, Cauvery, Kabini, Vedavathi, Netravathi, Sharavathi, Bhavani, Kapila, Thunga, Bhima, and others. Hostel fee is approximately ₹5,000/year (sharing). Rooms are equipped with a bed, almirah, and study table, and include hot water, Wi-Fi, washing machines, study rooms, TV, and 24/7 security. Mess charges are approximately ₹4,000/year extra.

MD Psychiatry PG residents at NIMHANS receive a monthly stipend of approximately ₹80,000–₹85,000, which is among the highest for government medical institutions in India. MPhil students receive ₹25,000/month plus ₹15,000/year contingency grants. MPH Institute Stipendiary candidates receive ₹25,000/month.

NIMHANS is India's premier institution for Ph.D. research in mental health, psychiatry, neurology, clinical psychology, psychiatric social work, neuroscience, biostatistics, biophysics, and human genetics. The institute offers Ph.D. programs in 24 specializations with a duration of 3–5 years. Admitted students receive NIMHANS fellowship stipends, contingency grants, and access to world-class labs and one of the largest mental health libraries globally. Candidates clearing UGC/CSIR/ICMR/DBT exams or holding JRF/SRF positions are directly eligible for the interview.
