National Institute of Technology Patna (NIT Patna), formerly known as Bihar School of Engineering and later Bihar College of Engineering, is one of India's oldest and most respected technical institutions. Originally established in 1886 as a pleaders' survey training school, it was upgraded to Bihar College of Engineering in 1924, making it the sixth oldest engineering institute in India. On 28 January 2004, the Government of India rechristened it as the National Institute of Technology Patna, granting it the status of an autonomous institute under the Ministry of Education (formerly MHRD). Located on Ashok Rajpath in Mahendru, Patna, Bihar, NIT Patna is declared a Centre of Excellence for imparting high-level education in Engineering, Technology, Science, and Humanities. The institute is the 18th National Institute of Technology created by the Government of India and is recognized as an Institute of National Importance.
