National Institute of Technology Silchar (NIT Silchar or NITS) is one of the 31 National Institutes of Technology in India, established in 1967 as a Regional Engineering College (REC) in Silchar, Assam. It was a joint venture between the Government of India and the State Government of Assam, created to address the nation's growing need for skilled technical manpower. The institute was upgraded to NIT status in 2002 and declared an Institute of National Importance under the NIT Act 2007. NIT Silchar's campus is spread across an impressive 625 acres of lush green land, located on the Silchar-Hailakandi road, approximately 12 kilometres from Silchar city. Academically, NIT Silchar offers B.Tech programs in Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Civil Engineering. The annual B.Tech intake is 903 seats as per the 2025 JoSAA seat matrix. The M.Tech program covers 27 specializations including Computer Engineering, VLSI Design, Thermal Sciences, and Data Sciences, while the MBA and M.Sc programs cater to management and science aspirants. Research programs leading to Ph.D. degrees are available across all departments. Placement performance at NIT Silchar has been commendable. During the 2024 placement season, the highest package was Rs 52.89 LPA, with an average of Rs 13.34 LPA. In 2025, the highest package reached Rs 60 LPA with an average of Rs 12.25 LPA. The CSE branch typically achieves near-complete placement with top companies like Amazon, Microsoft, Adobe, Arcesium, Swiggy, Goldman Sachs, and Infosys recruiting from campus. Campus life at NIT Silchar is vibrant. Tecnoesis, the annual technical and management festival, features competitions, hackathons, robotic events, and guest lectures. Incandescence, the annual cultural fest held in February, attracts artists and performers from across the country.
