Nil Ratan Sircar Medical College and Hospital (NRSMC), Kolkata, is one of India's oldest and most distinguished medical institutions, established on 1 December 1873 as Sealdah Medical School during the British era. Renamed in 1950 after renowned freedom fighter and physician Sir Nilratan Sircar (an alumnus), NRS is affiliated with West Bengal University of Health Sciences (WBUHS) and recognised by the National Medical Commission (NMC). NIRF Medical Rank 44 (2024). Formerly known as Campbell Medical School. The college is located on a 33-acre campus at 138, A.J.C. Bose Road, Sealdah, Kolkata — 2 km from Sealdah Railway Station and 17 km from Kolkata Airport — with a sprawling layout including a pond, playground, two main gates, and separate buildings for different specialities and super-specialities. NRSMC offers 250 MBBS seats, 122 PG seats (MD/MS in 19 disciplines), and 31 super-specialty seats (DM/MCh in 11 streams including DM Cardiology, DM Neurology, DM Haematology, MCh Neurosurgery, MCh Urology). The hospital has 1,500+ beds and provides clinical training across 30+ departments with super-specialty care in Neurology, Cardiology, and Nephrology. The 4,000 sq.m. academic building is fully air-conditioned with spacious AC lecture halls, a centrally AC library (250-seat capacity, 31,000+ books, 813 dissertations, 30 international + 61 national journals).
