About Osmania Medical College
Osmania Medical College (OMC), Hyderabad, is one of the oldest and most prestigious medical institutions in the world, originally founded in 1846 as Hyderabad Medical School during the reign of the 5th Nizam of Hyderabad, Afzal ud Dowla, Asaf Jah V. William Campbell Maclean established it after successfully treating the ailing Nizam with Western medicine. In 1846, Edward Lawrie, then principal, conducted landmark chloroform anaesthesia experiments (Hyderabad Chloroform Commission) at the attached Afzal Gunj Hospital. After Osmania University's establishment in 1919 by the 7th Nizam Mir Osman Ali Khan, it was renamed Osmania Medical College.
