About Pabitra Mohan Pradhan Medical College and Hospital, Talcher
Pabitra Mohan Pradhan Medical College and Hospital (PMPMCH), previously known as the Mahanadi Institute of Medical Science and Research, is a newly established Government medical college located in Talcher, Angul District, Odisha. The college is named after Pabitra Mohan Pradhan, a revered personality from the region, and represents a major milestone in the expansion of medical education in the mineral-rich Talcher–Angul belt of Odisha. The institution was conceived and funded by Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL), a subsidiary of Coal India Limited (CIL) — one of the world's largest coal-producing companies. MCL reiterated its commitment to setting up a medical college in Odisha and signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Buildings Construction Corporation of India (NBCC) to construct the facility. The Government of Odisha formally agreed in 2022 to operate the medical college, while MCL continues to provide operational funding. The college serves as a tertiary healthcare and medical education facility for the coal mining and industrial population of the Talcher–Angul region, as well as the broader surrounding tribal and rural communities. The existing Nehru Shatabdi Hospital of MCL was taken over by the Government of Odisha and renamed as the Pabitra Mohan Pradhan Government Hospital, which functions as the teaching hospital for the medical college. This hospital-turned-teaching institution brings decades of healthcare experience to the new medical college, offering students immediate exposure to a functional patient population. In a high-level meeting chaired by State Health Secretary Aswathy S in February 2025, senior officials reviewed the college's operational readiness — including building completion, equipment procurement, and staffing gaps. Prof. Dr. Kirtirekha Mohapatra, a professor from the OBG department of SCB Medical College and Hospital (Cuttack), was appointed as the Dean and Principal. Dr. Tarangini Das from the Anaesthesiology department of SCBMCH was posted as the Superintendent. These appointments reflect the Government of Odisha's seriousness in ensuring PMPMCH is led by experienced medical professionals from its premier institutions. The National Medical Commission (NMC) approved 100 MBBS seats for PMPMCH, and the academic session commenced from 2025-26. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi welcomed this approval, noting that with PMPMCH and the new Phulbani Government Medical College together, Odisha's total MBBS seats have risen from 2,450 to 2,650. Talcher is a major coal-mining and industrial town in Angul District, located approximately 120 km from Bhubaneswar. The Talcher Thermal Power Station and several coal mines dominate the economy of the area, but healthcare access for the mining workforce and surrounding communities has historically been limited. The establishment of PMPMCH directly addresses this gap. The attached teaching hospital — the former MCL Nehru Shatabdi Hospital — is a modern facility equipped with essential departments, operation theatres, ICU, and diagnostic facilities, providing students with strong foundational clinical training. Infrastructure and academic facilities at PMPMCH include modern lecture halls, pre-clinical and para-clinical laboratories, a library, and hostel facilities for both male and female students. The campus is designed to meet NMC standards for medical education delivery. As a newly established institution, PMPMCH is in a phase of active development and is expected to grow steadily in terms of hospital bed capacity, faculty strength, and eventually, postgraduate programmes. In summary, Pabitra Mohan Pradhan Medical College and Hospital, Talcher is a unique government medical college established through the CSR and public-private partnership model of MCL and the Government of Odisha — making it one of the few medical colleges in India to be funded by a PSU coal company. For NEET aspirants from Odisha seeking affordable government medical education, PMPMCH offers a compelling opportunity, especially given its industrial and community healthcare setting.
