About Pt. Raghunath Murmu Medical College and Hospital, Baripada

Official website

Pandit Raghunath Murmu Medical College and Hospital (PRMMCH), popularly known as Baripada Medical College, is a Government medical college established in 2017 in Baripada, Mayurbhanj District, Odisha. The college is named after Pandit Raghunath Murmu — the legendary scholar, playwright, musician, and creator of the Ol Chiki script for the Santali language — honouring his monumental contribution to tribal education, literature, and cultural preservation. This naming reflects the institution's deep commitment to serving and empowering the tribal communities of northern Odisha. PRMMCH is affiliated with the Odisha University of Health Sciences (OUHS), Bhubaneswar, and recognised by the National Medical Commission (NMC). It was established by the Government of Odisha to address the healthcare and medical education needs of the historically underserved Mayurbhanj district — one of India's largest districts by area and home to a significant Santali tribal population. The college initially commenced with 100 MBBS seats, which was subsequently increased to the current 125 seats. Campus & Infrastructure: The college campus is spread over 21.02 acres at Rangamatia, Sankhabhanga, Baripada. The campus houses an academic block, administrative block, staff quarters, undergraduate hostels, a cafeteria, and a gymnasium. The layout provides a dedicated space for both learning and student welfare. There are spacious classrooms, lecture halls, examination halls, and demonstration rooms. The institution is fully equipped with clinical and research laboratories, specimen museums, and an auditorium. The library and information centre houses a strong collection of medical books and subscribes to Indian and foreign journals, with separate reading spaces for UG students and teaching staff. Teaching Hospital: The teaching hospital was established by upgrading the District Headquarters Hospital in Baripada, which continues to provide clinical exposure alongside the newly constructed hospital on campus. The hospital has grown to approximately 600 beds, serving tribal communities of Mayurbhanj and nearby areas bordering Jharkhand. It supports multiple public health programmes, maternal and child health initiatives, and specialist services. The hospital handles emergency, trauma, and complex referral cases from the entire Mayurbhanj district. The rich tribal disease profile — including sickle cell disease, malaria, tuberculosis, snake bites, and malnutrition — provides MBBS students with unique and medically significant clinical experiences. Courses & Academics: PRMMCH offers MBBS (125 seats, 5.5 years), DMLT (Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology, 60 seats), DMRT (Diploma in Medical Radiography Technology, 20 seats), and COTT (Certificate course in OT Technician). The college follows the NMC CBME curriculum. Admissions to MBBS are through NEET UG, with 15% AIQ seats (MCC) and 85% state quota seats (OJEEB). PG DNB programmes are also offered (bond applicable post-DNB). Location & Connectivity: Baripada is located approximately 230 km from Biju Patnaik International Airport (Bhubaneswar) and approximately 270 km from Kolkata. The town is well-connected by road (NH-18 and NH-49) and rail (Baripada Railway Station is part of the Rupsa–Baripada branch line). Baripada is the headquarters of Mayurbhanj District, the gateway to Simlipal National Park, and a culturally vibrant city with strong tribal heritage. In summary, PRMMCH Baripada is a well-established government medical college with strong tribal community healthcare roots, a growing 600-bed hospital, modern campus infrastructure, and a meaningful legacy connected to Pandit Raghunath Murmu's vision for tribal empowerment through education.
