Rajarshee Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj Government Medical College (RCSM GMC), Kolhapur is a state government medical college established in the year 2000, administered by the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER), Government of Maharashtra, and affiliated to the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS), Nashik. The college is attached to the historic Chhatrapati Pramila Raje General Hospital (CPR Hospital), popularly known as 'Thorla Davakhana,' which traces its origins to 1884. It is recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC) for an annual MBBS intake of 150 students. The college sits on roughly a 40-acre campus at Shenda Park on the outskirts of Kolhapur city, featuring a small lake near the boys' hostels. Departments span pre-clinical (Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry), para-clinical (Pathology, Microbiology, Pharmacology, Forensic Medicine & Toxicology, Community Medicine) and clinical disciplines (General Medicine, General Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Pediatrics, Orthopaedics, Ophthalmology, ENT, Dermatology, Psychiatry, Anesthesiology, Radiology, Respiratory Medicine, Tuberculosis, Dentistry, Physiotherapy). The affiliated CPR Hospital has an indoor bed capacity of around 850 (other sources cite ~665-680 beds across wards), an OPD load of roughly 1,200-1,500 patients/day, and serves as the principal tertiary-care referral hospital for Kolhapur and neighbouring districts (Sangli, Satara, and parts of northern Karnataka).
