About Rural Medical College, Loni (Dr. Balasaheb Vikhe Patil Rural Medical College)
Dr. Balasaheb Vikhe Patil Rural Medical College (commonly known as Rural Medical College or RMC Loni) is a premier medical institution located in Loni, Taluka Rahata, District Ahmednagar, Maharashtra. It is a constituent college of the Pravara Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), a Deemed to be University recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) since May 2003. The college was established in 1984 by Dr. Balasaheb Vikhe Patil under the aegis of the Pravara Medical Trust, which was originally founded in 1972 by Padmashri Dr. Vithalrao Vikhe Patil with a mission to bring quality healthcare and medical education to the rural heartland of Maharashtra. The institution is situated on the Manmad–Nashik State Highway and spans a lush, sprawling campus of approximately 115.9 to 120 acres. The campus is surrounded by natural greenery and provides an ideal environment for both academic pursuits and personal development. It is located approximately 20 km from Shirdi International Airport and 24 km from Belapur Railway Station, making it well-connected to major transportation hubs. The PIMS complex houses not only the Rural Medical College but also the Rural Dental College, the Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam College of Physiotherapy, the College of Nursing, the Centre for Biotechnology, and the Centre for Social Medicine, making it a comprehensive health sciences university campus. History & Vision: The Pravara Medical Trust started providing primary and secondary medical care in 1976 with a modest 100-bed general hospital. Responding to the growing healthcare needs of the region, the hospital expanded into a 1,275-bed multi-disciplinary super-specialty institute. The Rural Medical College was formally established in 1984, and since then it has trained thousands of doctors who have served both in India and abroad. The college's founding philosophy — to develop doctors who understand and serve rural populations — continues to be at the core of its academic culture. The PIMS complex today serves a population of over two million from the Ahmednagar, Nashik, and surrounding districts. Academics & Curriculum: RMC Loni offers the undergraduate MBBS programme with an annual intake of 200 seats. At the postgraduate level, the college offers 18 MD/MS speciality programmes with a combined intake of 111 seats. The MBBS programme follows the Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) curriculum mandated by NMC and spans 4.5 years of academic training followed by one year of compulsory rotating internship (total 5.5 years). The curriculum has a strong emphasis on community and rural medicine, preventive health, and primary care — reflecting the institution's founding mission. PG specialties span both clinical and non-clinical disciplines and the college also offers M.Sc programmes in Anatomy, Physiology, Pharmacology, and Microbiology through PIMS-AICET. Teaching Hospital: The attached Dr. Vitthalrao Vikhe Patil Pravara Rural Hospital is a 1,275-bed multi-specialty teaching and referral hospital — one of the largest in rural Maharashtra. The hospital has 1,005 teaching beds as registered with NMC, and records a daily average OPD attendance of over 2,053 patients. It is equipped with Ultrasonography, Colour Doppler, CT Scan, MRI, Digital X-ray, Cardiac Monitoring, and a fully functional Blood Bank. The hospital operates a 24-hour Emergency and Trauma Care centre managed by experienced specialists. Super-speciality departments include Cardiology, Oncology, Nephrology, Neonatology, and Neurology. The hospital assists state and central governments in implementing National Public Health Programmes and runs regular outreach camps in remote villages. A mobile health team attends to migratory harvest labourers and other vulnerable populations. A Dental Hospital offering all dental specialties has also been operational since 1989. Infrastructure & Research: The campus features modern, air-conditioned smart lecture halls equipped with audio-visual teaching technology, spacious dissection halls, state-of-the-art simulation labs, and fully equipped departmental laboratories across all pre-clinical, para-clinical, and clinical disciplines. The central medical library is extensively stocked with medical textbooks and subscribes to national and international journals, with online database access. A large auditorium supports academic conferences, seminars, and cultural events. The college publishes Pravara Medical Review (PMR), a regular peer-reviewed university journal, promoting research culture among faculty and students. The institution received a CRISIL Corporate Credit Rating of 'BBB+/Stable', reflecting its financial stability and governance quality. Hostel & Campus Life: Separate and well-maintained hostel facilities are available for both male and female students. MBBS students can opt for a single-occupancy room at ₹1,25,000 per annum or a double-occupancy room at ₹60,000 per annum. PG students are charged ₹1,25,000 (single) or ₹75,000 (double) per year. Canteen and mess facilities are provided within the hostel premises. The sprawling green campus supports sports activities including cricket, volleyball, football, and indoor games. Cultural festivals, annual sports meets, and various student clubs keep campus life vibrant. NSS units conduct regular blood donation camps, health awareness programmes, and village health outreach activities. Scholarships & Bond: As a Deemed University, admissions are managed through MCC (Medical Counselling Committee) counselling under the Deemed University quota. After completing the MBBS internship, graduates must serve a compulsory rural service bond as stipulated by the Maharashtra government. The monthly internship stipend is provided as per institutional and state norms. NIRF ranked the institution 101st in the medical category in 2022, reflecting its academic standing nationally. Overall, Rural Medical College (PIMS) Loni is one of India's most established and reputable private Deemed medical universities, with a legacy of nearly five decades in rural healthcare and medical education. Its combination of a vast teaching hospital, rich clinical exposure, CBME-aligned academics, diverse PG programmes, sprawling campus, and a strong community health ethos makes it a top choice for both MBBS aspirants and postgraduate medical candidates.
