About Saheed Rendo Majhi Medical College & Hospital, Bhawanipatna
Saheed Rendo Majhi Medical College & Hospital (SRMMCH), located at Bhangabari on the Bhawanipatna–Raipur Highway, Kalahandi District, Odisha, is a government medical college established in 2023. Named in honour of Saheed Rendo Majhi — the most prominent tribal freedom fighter of Kalahandi who made the supreme sacrifice for the people of the region — the college embodies the state government's commitment to improving healthcare access in one of Odisha's most underdeveloped districts. The NMC issued the Letter of Permission (LOP) on 11 April 2023 for 100 MBBS seats starting AY 2023-24. The college was formally inaugurated in November 2023 by the Chief Minister of Odisha with considerable fanfare, following years of demand from residents of Kalahandi. It is affiliated with Maa Manikeswari University (Kalahandi University), Bhawanipatna. The campus is spread over approximately 43 acres, nestled amidst lush green forests and picturesque hills of Kalahandi, situated on the banks of the river Tel — a tributary of the Mahanadi. This natural setting makes it one of the most scenically beautiful medical college campuses in Odisha. The college is approximately 10.6 km from Junagarh Road Railway Station (the nearest railhead) and approximately 47 km from Utkela Airport. Teaching Hospital: The attached teaching hospital has 300 beds, equipped with a modern ICU, fully functional operation theatres, and advanced diagnostic facilities including laboratory services, radiology, and imaging. The hospital witnesses a daily OPD of over 650 patients from Kalahandi and neighbouring districts. Emergency care is available 24 hours. Specialist departments cover all major clinical disciplines needed for MBBS training. The high patient load from the tribal and rural Kalahandi belt ensures students gain rich clinical exposure to community health challenges. Infrastructure: The campus features modern classrooms, demonstration rooms, and fully equipped pre-clinical and para-clinical laboratories. A state-of-the-art central library serves as the cornerstone of academic activities — equipped with a vast collection of national and international journals, reference materials, and an e-library with 25 computer nodes, the library meets NMC requirements while offering a fully air-conditioned, high-speed Wi-Fi facility. Separate hostels for boys and girls are available with furnished rooms (beds, study tables, wardrobes), Wi-Fi, security, mess, and recreation areas. The institution is actively recruiting faculty, senior residents, tutors, and nursing officers across departments — reflecting an energetic phase of institutional development. Walk-in interviews and open recruitment drives are regularly conducted. SRMMCH represents Kalahandi's first-ever medical institution, addressing the acute healthcare and medical education gap in a district historically classified among Odisha's most disadvantaged.
