Shri B. A. Patil Ayurvedic Medical College, Ghataprabha - Overview

History and Founding Vision

The college traces its origins to the Shri J. G. Co-operative Hospital Society, founded with the conviction that Ayurveda could meaningfully serve the medical needs of rural communities around Gokak and Ghataprabha. Backed by the society's founder president and later by former minister and MLA Shri A. B. Patil, the institution opened its doors in 1996-97 with just 25 BAMS seats. Over nearly three decades, sustained investment in faculty, hospital infrastructure, and laboratories allowed the intake to expand to 100 seats from the 2019-20 academic year, reflecting steady regulatory confidence from RGUHS and NCISM.

Academic Programme and Departments

The BAMS curriculum at the college follows the NCISM-prescribed structure of three Professional terms of eighteen months each, followed by a one-year compulsory rotatory internship, totalling five and a half years. All fourteen CCIM/NCISM-mandated departments are functional, spanning foundational subjects such as Rachana Sharira (Anatomy) and Kriya Sharira (Physiology) through clinical specialties like Kayachikitsa, Shalya Tantra, Shalakya Tantra, Panchakarma, Prasuti Tantra & Stree Roga, and Kaumarabhritya. Each department maintains its own subject museum and laboratory, and clinical postings in the attached hospital begin from the very first professional year through structured OPD exposure.

Hospital and Clinical Training

Clinical training is anchored by the college's attached Ayurvedic teaching hospital, which the official website describes as having 200 beds spread across six specialty wards. The hospital combines an OPD that runs daily, an operation theatre for surgical and para-surgical procedures, a dedicated panchakarma therapy section, a yoga and physiotherapy centre, and round-the-clock emergency services. Diagnostic facilities including X-ray, ECG, USG, EEG and ultrasound let students bridge classical Ayurvedic assessment with modern diagnostic tools while treating real patients from the surrounding villages, including through regular free medical camps.

Beyond classrooms and the hospital, the campus includes a 10,000-plus book library with digital HELINET access, a dissection hall, an audio-visual room with interactive smart boards, and a three-acre herbal garden carrying over 400 medicinal plant species that directly supports Dravyaguna study. Residential students are housed in separate boys' and girls' hostels with attached dining halls, while a sports ground and a 250-seat auditorium support extracurricular, cultural, and NSS activities throughout the academic year.
