About Shri Bhausaheb Hire Government Medical College & Hospital, Dhule
Shri Bhausaheb Hire Government Medical College & Hospital (SBHGMC), popularly known as GMC Dhule, is a distinguished government medical institution established in 1989 in Dhule, Maharashtra. It is named after Bhausaheb Hire, a visionary philanthropist who played a seminal role in the establishment of the college and the development of healthcare in the region. The college is affiliated with Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS), Nashik, and recognised by the National Medical Commission (NMC), Government of India. Located in the north-western part of Maharashtra, Dhule is a historically significant district town situated on the Surat–Bypass highway. The region is predominantly tribal and rural, with significant populations from the Nandurbar, Jalgaon, and Nashik districts also using SBHGMC's services. The college campus is spread over approximately 10.11 acres of lush green cover, housing the college, administrative building, hospital, and hostel within a compact and well-maintained campus. The campus is approximately 140 km from Chikkalthana Airport (Aurangabad/Sambhajinagar) and well-connected to Nashik (approximately 100 km) and Surat (approximately 220 km). History & Growth: SBHGMC was established in 1989 by the Government of Maharashtra to address the acute healthcare and medical education deficit in the tribal and rural north-western Maharashtra region. Starting with an initial batch, the college progressively expanded its MBBS intake and introduced postgraduate programmes from 2020. PG courses are now offered in 13 disciplines. The institution additionally offers B.Sc PMT (Para-Medical Technology), PG DMLT (Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology), MUHS-affiliated fellowship courses, and GNM Nursing courses, making it a comprehensive healthcare education campus. Academics & Curriculum: SBHGMC offers the undergraduate MBBS programme with an annual intake of 150 seats (NMC permitted) and postgraduate MD/MS programmes across 13 disciplines with a combined intake of approximately 46 seats. The MBBS programme follows the Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) curriculum mandated by NMC and spans 4.5 years of academic training followed by one year of compulsory rotating internship (total 5.5 years). The curriculum has a strong emphasis on community health, tribal medicine, and primary healthcare, reflecting the institution's responsibility to the predominantly rural and tribal population it serves. Teaching Hospital: The attached government hospital (Sarvopchar Rugnalaya) is a multi-specialty tertiary-care government teaching hospital with a bed capacity of 545 beds and a daily average OPD footfall of over 1,400 patients from Dhule, Nandurbar, and the tribal belts of north-western Maharashtra. The hospital provides round-the-clock emergency and trauma care, has ICU facilities, fully functional operation theatres, modern diagnostic labs, radiology services (CT, X-ray, USG), and a Blood Bank. Departments include General Medicine, General Surgery, Paediatrics, OBG, Orthopaedics, Ophthalmology, ENT, Dermatology, Psychiatry, Anaesthesiology, Pulmonary Medicine, Community Medicine, Forensic Medicine, Pathology, Microbiology, and Biochemistry. Infrastructure: The college features spacious classrooms, modern lecture halls, examination halls, demonstration rooms, a large dissection hall, and fully equipped departmental laboratories. The central library covers an area of approximately 8,213 sq ft and houses 13,500+ medical books, with subscriptions to Indian and foreign journals including back numbers. Smart classrooms with audio-visual teaching facilities support CBME delivery. The campus also offers a gymnasium for students. Hostel & Campus Life: SBHGMC provides separate hostel facilities for boys and girls. The annual hostel fee is approximately ₹4,000 per year — one of the most affordable in Maharashtra. Hostels have separate rooms for UG and PG students, with shared rooms (double/triple occupancy), furnished essentials, Wi-Fi, 24-hour security, reading rooms, and mess facilities. Hostel is optional for UG students but compulsory for interns and residents. NSS units conduct regular health camps, blood donation drives, and outreach to tribal communities in nearby villages. Internship & Bond: MBBS interns receive a monthly stipend of ₹18,000 from the Government of Maharashtra. After completing the MBBS internship, graduates from government college seats must serve a 1-year compulsory government/rural service bond as per GR No. MED 1007/CR-490/07/Ed-2 dated 8 February 2008. Non-compliance attracts a non-refundable penalty of ₹10,00,000. PG residents receive a monthly stipend (amount varies by speciality and year). In summary, Shri Bhausaheb Hire Government Medical College, Dhule is one of Maharashtra's established government medical institutions offering quality medical education at highly subsidised fees. Its combination of 545-bed teaching hospital, 1,400+ daily OPD patients, 13 PG disciplines, affordable hostel (₹4,000/year), and comprehensive library makes it a highly valued institution for medical aspirants in the Dhule–Nandurbar–Nashik–Jalgaon belt of Maharashtra.
