About Shri Vasantrao Naik Government Medical College & Hospital, Yavatmal

Shri Vasantrao Naik Government Medical College & Hospital (SVNGMC), popularly known as GMC Yavatmal, is a prestigious government medical college established in 1989 by the Government of Maharashtra. It is named after Shri Vasantrao Naik, the former Chief Minister of Maharashtra and a revered son of the Vidarbha soil, who played a transformative role in the development of the region. The college was founded with the primary mission of providing quality healthcare and medical education to the needy and rural population in and around Yavatmal District and the broader Vidarbha region of Maharashtra. The institution is located on Waghapur Road, Palswadi Camp, Civil Lines, Yavatmal — situated in a serene, non-polluted hilly area of Vidarbha. The campus spans over 5,13,969 square meters (approximately 127 acres) of lush green land, housing the academic complex, hospital, administrative building, hostels, and residential quarters. The city of Yavatmal is well-connected by road to Nagpur (approximately 150 km), which serves as the nearest major city and railhead hub. The nearest railway station is Dhamangaon, approximately 40 km away. Yavatmal also has a recently developed airstrip, bringing it on the airline map. The campus environment, free from urban pollution, provides a peaceful and focused academic atmosphere for medical students. History & Growth: Starting with a modest intake of 50 MBBS students in 1989, SVNGMC has grown steadily over three decades. The intake was subsequently increased to 100, then 150, and most recently to 200 MBBS seats per year, reflecting the government's commitment to expanding medical education in the region. The college is regulated by the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER), Mumbai, and affiliated with Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS), Nashik (college code: 1507). Over the years, graduates of SVNGMC have gone on to practice successfully not only across India but also in countries including the USA, UK, Middle East, and Europe. Academics & Curriculum: SVNGMC offers the undergraduate MBBS programme with an annual intake of 200 seats. At the postgraduate level, the college offers MD/MS programmes across 14 disciplines with a combined intake of 51 seats, covering both clinical and non-clinical specialties. The MBBS programme follows the Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) curriculum mandated by NMC and spans 4.5 years of academic training followed by one year of compulsory rotating internship (total 5.5 years). The curriculum emphasises rural and community health, primary care, and preventive medicine, in keeping with the college's founding mission in the Vidarbha region. Teaching Hospital: The attached SVNGMC Hospital is a multi-specialty government teaching hospital with over 765 teaching beds, catering to a daily average outpatient load of over 1,400 patients from Yavatmal and the surrounding districts of Vidarbha. The hospital is a major referral centre for the region, providing services in General Medicine, General Surgery, Paediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Orthopaedics, Ophthalmology, ENT, Dermatology, Psychiatry, Anaesthesiology, Radiology, Pulmonology, Community Medicine, and Forensic Medicine. Emergency and trauma care is available round the clock. The high patient load and complex case mix give medical students and PG residents exceptional clinical training opportunities. Infrastructure: The college boasts a grand, well-furnished Administrative and Academic building. Academic facilities include spacious classrooms and lecture halls, demonstration rooms, examination halls, and a fully equipped dissection hall. The campus features an auditorium with a seating capacity of over 800 with an advanced sound system. The central library covers an area of 1,584 square meters and has a seating capacity of 300 for UG students and 50 for PG students, housing 13,694 books — 7,660 textbooks and 6,034 reference books. The college is fully equipped with clinical and research laboratories, departmental specimen museums, and modern diagnostic facilities. A gymnasium is available for students on campus. Faculty: The college has a faculty strength of over 203 members across all departments, including Professors, Associate Professors, and Assistant Professors. Notable faculty include Dr. Pralhad Rathod (Dermatology), Dr. Shrikant Meshram (Psychiatry), Dr. S.I. Shaikh (Anatomy), Dr. Prashant Dharme (Biochemistry), Dr. M.T. Jiwtode (Physiology), Dr. R.P. Fule (Microbiology), Dr. P.S. Shaikh (Pharmacology), and Dr. Manish Baburao Shrigiriwar (Forensic Medicine). Faculty members are actively involved in research, CME activities, and community health initiatives. Hostel & Campus Life: SVNGMC provides separate, fully secured hostel facilities for boys and girls. The Boys' Hostel has a capacity of 268 students and the Girls' Hostel accommodates 280 students. Both hostels are equipped with mess, drinking water facilities, CCTV surveillance, and 24-hour security. The annual hostel fee is approximately ₹4,000, making it one of the most affordable hostel facilities among government medical colleges in Maharashtra. A kitchen and mess within the hostel provide regular meals. Campus life is enriched by cultural festivals, annual sports meets, NSS activities, inter-departmental competitions, and academic events. Internship & Bond: The MBBS internship is for one year with a monthly stipend of ₹20,000. After completing the internship, MBBS graduates from government college seats (AIQ and state quota) must serve a 1-year government/rural service bond as per Government Resolution No. MED 1007/CR-490/07/Ed-2 dated 8th February 2008. Non-compliance entails a non-refundable penalty of ₹10,00,000. PG graduates also have a service bond obligation. PG residents receive a monthly stipend of approximately ₹92,000–₹94,000 depending on the year and specialty. In summary, Shri Vasantrao Naik Government Medical College, Yavatmal is one of the most respected and affordable government medical colleges in Vidarbha, Maharashtra.
