About Shri Vijay Mahantesh Ayurvedic Medical College and Research Centre, Ilkal
Shri Vijay Mahantesh Ayurvedic Medical College and Research Centre, Ilkal — popularly known as SVM Ayurvedic Medical College — is one of the foremost institutions of Ayurvedic education in North Karnataka, and a landmark name among BAMS colleges in Karnataka. Established in 1992 by the Shri Vijay Mahantesh Vidya Vardhak Sangha under the inspiration of President Gurumahanta Swamji, the college was born from a vision to carry the healing light of Ayurveda to the rural and semi-urban heartlands of the Bagalkot district, where access to quality medical education was historically limited. The college was initially affiliated with Karnataka University, Dharwad. Following the establishment of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS), Bangalore in 1996, the institution was brought under RGUHS affiliation — a relationship it proudly maintains to this day. Over three decades, the college's sanctioned intake capacity has grown from its original 50 seats to the current 60 undergraduate (BAMS) seats, reflecting the confidence that regulatory bodies have placed in this institution. The college and its attached hospital are recognized by the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM), the Department of AYUSH, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India, and the Government of Karnataka. A testament to its commitment to quality assurance, SVM Ayurvedic Medical College holds a B-Grade Accreditation from the Quality Council of India (QCI), one of the few private Ayurvedic colleges in North Karnataka to have achieved this recognition. Academically, SVM Ayurvedic Medical College offers a comprehensive Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) programme — a 5.5-year course comprising 4.5 years of classroom and clinical training followed by a mandatory one-year rotatory internship. At the postgraduate level, the college has an annual intake of 30 MD/MS scholars distributed across six specializations: Kayachikitsa, Panchakarma, Shalya Tantra, Shalakya Tantra (Netra Roga and Karna-Nasa-Mukha Roga), Streeroga & Prasutitantra, and Ayurved Samhita & Siddhanta. This breadth of PG offerings positions the college as a comprehensive centre for advanced Ayurvedic scholarship in the region. Admissions to both UG and PG programmes are strictly based on NEET-UG and AIAPGET scores respectively, and are conducted through the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA). The college follows a hospital-integrated medical education model, ensuring that clinical exposure begins early in a student's academic journey. The attached RPK Ayurvedic Hospital (R.P. Karadi Ayurvedic Hospital) is a 160-bedded super-specialty Ayurvedic hospital located in Ilkal. It operates 9 outpatient departments (OPDs) catering to Kayachikitsa, Shalya Tantra, Shalakya Tantra, Prasutitantra & Streeroga, Kaumarbhritya, and Atyayeeka Chikitsa (emergency care). The hospital receives 150–200 patients daily, giving students rich exposure to real-world clinical practice across age groups and disease profiles. The hospital is particularly known for its hi-tech Panchakarma unit, which offers specialized therapeutic procedures such as Abhyanga, Sarvanga Sweda, Sirodhara, Sirovasti, Pizhichil, and other classical panchakarma therapies performed under the supervision of experienced specialist doctors. A well-equipped modern operation theatre handles surgical procedures using the time-tested Kshara Sutra technique for ano-rectal disorders — including piles, fistula-in-ano, fissure-in-ano, and anal prolapse — alongside modern trauma care, fracture management, Agnikarma, and leech applications. The hospital also houses a physiotherapy unit and a digital X-ray machine, ensuring patients receive integrative care. The college campus is equipped with a spacious library spread across approximately 1,800 sq. ft., housing more than 8,100 volumes of books spanning Ayurvedic classical texts, modern medical sciences, and interdisciplinary subjects. A separate Digital Library of approximately 2,300 sq. ft. provides UG and PG students with internet-enabled workstations for online research and access to e-resources. The campus also features a well-equipped Anatomy Dissection Hall with a dedicated preservation room, an Anatomy Museum housing a comprehensive collection of human body specimens, bone sets, fetal developmental models from week 1 to month 9, charts and slides. The seminar hall is equipped with LCD projectors, slide projectors, overhead projectors, and subject-specific anatomical and surgical models. A herbal garden maintained on campus supports the academic needs of students studying Dravyaguna (Ayurvedic pharmacology). Faculty at SVM Ayurvedic Medical College includes experienced professors, associate professors, and assistant professors across all 14 clinical and pre-clinical departments — from Rachana Sharir and Kriya Sharir to Panchakarma, Kayachikitsa, and Prasutitantra. The institution actively encourages research, CME activities, NSS programmes, and participation in inter-collegiate events. Multiple student welfare cells including an Institutional Ethical Committee, Anti-Ragging Committee, Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), Committee Against Sexual Harassment (CASH), and a Grievance Redressal Cell ensure a safe and supportive learning environment. For students aspiring to build a career in Ayurveda — whether in clinical practice, hospital management, pharmaceutical industry, Ayurvedic manufacturing, herbal cultivation, academic research, or international consultancy — SVM Ayurvedic Medical College, Ilkal offers a robust foundation. Its rural setting near the Bagalkot-Hungund highway, accessibility by road and bus from major Karnataka cities, strong community outreach through regular free medical camps, and a deeply rooted institutional culture of service and scholarship make it one of the most valued Ayurvedic medical colleges for BAMS admissions in Karnataka.
