About Sri Jagannath Medical College & Hospital, Puri
Sri Jagannath Medical College & Hospital (SJMCH), located on the Puri–Konark Marine Drive Road, Puri, Odisha, is a government medical college established in 2015 under the Government of Odisha. It is the 8th Government Medical College in Odisha and was inaugurated by Chief Minister Shri Naveen Patnaik on 4 July 2015. Named after Lord Jagannath — the presiding deity of Puri and the most sacred deity of Odisha — the college carries profound religious and cultural significance. It is affiliated with the Odisha University of Health Sciences (OUHS) and recognised by the National Medical Commission (NMC), with an annual intake of 100 MBBS students. Strategically located on the Puri–Konark Marine Drive Road, the college campus is 25.6 acres in extent and is complemented by a teaching hospital located approximately 5 km away, spanning 12 acres in the heart of Puri town. The academic campus houses the academic block, administrative block, auditorium, faculty and staff quarters, UG Boys' hostel, UG Girls' hostel, PG Residents' hostel, cafeteria, playground, and gymnasium — all within the 25.6-acre premises. Teaching Hospital: The teaching hospital currently operates from the upgraded former District Headquarters Hospital (DHH), Puri, with 380 beds equipped with ICU, ICCU, SNCU (Sick Newborn Care Unit), and separate OPDs for each clinical department. A new, fully equipped 700-bed teaching hospital is under construction on the main campus to meet NMC norms and further enhance clinical training. The hospital plays a vital role during major festivals like Rath Yatra — one of the world's largest religious gatherings — when healthcare demand in Puri surges enormously, providing students extraordinary exposure to mass casualty and emergency management. Location & Heritage: Puri is a globally recognised heritage city, home to the Shri Jagannath Temple (7 km from college), one of the four sacred dhams of Hinduism, and the famous Puri Beach. Konark Sun Temple (28 km) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Biju Patnaik International Airport (Bhubaneswar) is approximately 60 km away. The coastal location and rich cultural heritage make SJMCH one of the most uniquely situated government medical colleges in India. Infrastructure: The campus features modern smart classrooms, lecture halls, pre-clinical and para-clinical laboratories, a digital library, simulation facilities, specimen museums, and an auditorium. The medical college is ranked among the top new government medical colleges in Odisha based on infrastructure quality. In summary, SJMCH Puri is a well-established government medical college offering affordable MBBS education in one of India's most iconic coastal heritage cities, with a 380-bed hospital (700-bed expansion underway), a 25.6-acre campus on the Marine Drive, and a world-famous location adjacent to the Jagannath Temple and Puri Beach.
