About Sri Venkateswara Ayurvedic College & Hospital, Tirupati
Sri Venkateswara Ayurvedic College & Hospital (SVAYCH), Tirupati, is one of the most distinguished Ayurvedic institutions in Andhra Pradesh, proudly managed by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) — the most prestigious temple management body in the world. Established in 1983 on the SVIMS campus in Tirupati North, the college was conceived with a dual purpose: to impart high-quality traditional Ayurvedic medical education and to render free Ayurvedic healthcare services to the poor and needy of the region. The institution traces its philosophical origins to the Indian Institute of Research in Yoga and Allied Sciences, founded in Tirupati in 1975. Recognising the growing local demand for Ayurvedic treatment and the need to protect and propagate Vedic sciences, TTD resolved to establish a full-fledged Ayurvedic institution, and Sri Venkateswara Ayurvedic College was born. The college began with a modest intake of 20 BAMS students, later expanded to 40, and in 2009–2010, postgraduate MD/MS (Ayurveda Vachaspati) programmes were launched across six specialised departments. As of today, more than 36 batches of undergraduate students have successfully graduated from SVAYCH, with many alumni occupying prominent positions in government health services, reputed private hospitals, research institutions, and Ayurvedic academia across India and abroad. The college is affiliated with Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences (also known as Dr. YSR University of Health Sciences), Vijayawada, and is recognised by the Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM) / National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM). The academic structure at SVAYCH spans fourteen teaching departments, covering foundational disciplines such as Rachana Sharir (Anatomy), Kriya Sharir (Physiology), and Roga Nidana (Pathology), as well as applied clinical departments including Kayachikitsa (Internal Medicine), Shalya Tantra (Surgery), Panchakarma, Shalakya Tantra (ENT & Ophthalmology), Kaumarabhritya (Paediatrics), and Prasuti Tantra & Stree Roga (Obstetrics & Gynaecology). Faculty members are well-qualified professionals trained at premier Ayurvedic institutes across the country. The attached Sri Venkateswara Ayurvedic Hospital is a cornerstone of the institution, equipped with 210 inpatient beds and serving 400–500 outpatients daily across multiple OPD departments — entirely free of charge. The hospital is supported by dedicated theatres for Shalya Tantra (major and minor surgical procedures including Haemorrhoids and Fistula), a Panchakarma Theatre (offering Dhara, Vamana, Virecana, Vasti, Pizicil, Kati Vasti, Shiro Vasti, and other classical treatments), a Kriya Kalpa Theatre for Eye and ENT procedures, a Parasurgical Theatre for Kshara Karma, Agni Karma, and Jalaukavacarana, and a well-equipped maternity unit. Medicines are manufactured and supplied by the institution's own pharmacy — Shri Srinivasa Ayurveda Pharmacy — located at Srinivasa Mangapuram, Tirupati. This pharmacy produces around 300 time-tested Ayurvedic formulations. The college library is a robust academic resource housing 13,628 books — comprising 8,858 Ayurvedic texts, 4,088 modern medical books, and 682 general titles — supplemented by digital access to the YSRMEDNET Consortium and a curated collection of peer-reviewed Ayurvedic journals. The institution has also received ISO 50001 certification, a testament to its commitment to quality and energy management. Admissions to the BAMS programme are conducted through NEET UG followed by state-level counselling by Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences (AP AYUSH Counselling). PG MD/MS admissions are based on AIAPGET scores, with counselling managed by the same university. The college is committed to merit-based, transparent admissions, ensuring deserving candidates from across the country can benefit from quality Ayurvedic education in an environment steeped in tradition and academic excellence. With its unique combination of rigorous academics, rich traditional heritage, free public healthcare service, dedicated pharmacy, comprehensive library, and the spiritual backdrop of the TTD management, Sri Venkateswara Ayurvedic College & Hospital, Tirupati, stands as a model institution for Ayurvedic education in India.
