About Swami Ramanand Teerth Rural Government Medical College, Ambajogai
Swami Ramanand Teerth Rural Government Medical College (SRTR GMC), Ambajogai, holds the distinguished honor of being the first rural medical college in Asia. Established in 1975 in Ambajogai, Beed district of Maharashtra, the institution was founded with a bold and visionary mission — to bring quality medical education to the rural heartland of India and produce doctors who are rooted in community-based healthcare. Named after the revered freedom fighter and social activist Swami Ramanand Teerth, the college stands as a tribute to his legacy of social service and upliftment. The college was founded under the leadership of Dr. V. K. Dawale, FRCS, who served as its inaugural Dean. He was instrumental in transforming the dream of rural medical education into a reality. The first batch of 50 students was admitted in July 1975 and graduated in 1979, marking a watershed moment in Indian medical education. Post-graduate courses in various specializations were subsequently introduced with the approval of the Government of Maharashtra and the Medical Council of India, with the first postgraduates graduating in 1981. Located in Beed district, the college is spread across a sprawling campus of over 122 acres, offering ample space for academic and clinical activities. The campus underwent significant expansion over the decades — a new college building was completed in 2008, and the Dean's office, pre-clinical and para-clinical departments were shifted into this modern infrastructure. In 2009, a new residents' hostel with 124 rooms was constructed and has been operational since January 2010. SRTR GMC is affiliated with the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS), Nashik, and is recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC). It offers undergraduate MBBS (150 seats annually) and postgraduate MD/MS programs across 17 disciplines with a total intake of 69 PG seats. The institution is celebrated for its strong emphasis on rural and community-based medical education, giving students unparalleled clinical exposure in a high-patient-load environment. The academic infrastructure is well-developed, with 8 gallery-type lecture halls, spacious classrooms, examination halls, common rooms, and dedicated demonstration rooms. The college library houses over 21,000 books, subscribes to 66 Indian journals and 26 foreign journals, and features a digital library with dedicated reading spaces for both students and teaching staff. The teaching hospital — SRTR Government Hospital — is a tertiary care center with 518 operational beds and a 24x7 emergency and trauma care facility. The hospital records an average of 1,756 OPD visits and 173 IPD admissions per day, providing students with rich and diverse clinical exposure. The hospital is equipped with a FDA-approved Blood Bank, ART Unit, ICTC Unit, Physiotherapy unit, Eye Bank, and dedicated burn treatment facilities. A new hospital building for the medical unit was completed in 2007, and additional surgical expansion is underway. The medical specialties covered include General Medicine, General Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Paediatrics, Orthopaedics, Dermatology, Psychiatry, Radiodiagnosis, ENT, Ophthalmology, Anaesthesiology, and more. There are full-fledged NICU, PICU, and RICU units, along with intensive care capabilities. The campus offers vibrant student life with facilities for indoor and outdoor sports and recreational activities. Separate hostels for boys and girls ensure comfortable residential arrangements for students from across Maharashtra and beyond. The institution adheres to the Government of Maharashtra's service bond policy, requiring graduates to serve in government, local body, or defence services for one year post-internship. With over five decades of academic legacy, SRTR GMC has produced thousands of skilled medical professionals who have served rural and urban communities across India and globally. Its unique identity as Asia's first rural medical college continues to attract NEET aspirants seeking affordable, government-backed, high-quality medical education deeply connected to the community's health needs.
