About Topiwala National Medical College, Mumbai
Topiwala National Medical College (TNMC), Mumbai, is one of India's oldest and most storied medical institutions, established on 4th September 1921 during the Non-Cooperation Movement led by Mahatma Gandhi. Founded as the National Medical College, it was born out of a patriotic spirit — medical students boycotted British-controlled institutions like Grant Medical College to establish a truly Indian-run medical college. The institution began at Victoria Cross Lane, Byculla, Mumbai, and its very founding reflects an extraordinary chapter of India's freedom struggle. The college's growth is inseparably linked to the philanthropy of Dr. A. L. Nair, a Mumbai-based medical entrepreneur who donated land for the hospital campus in 1924 and helped set up a well-equipped hospital named after his mother, Bai Yamunabai Laxman Nair (BYL Nair). In 1946, the Bombay Municipal Corporation took over both the college and the hospital, recognizing their educational excellence. The institution was officially renamed Topiwala National Medical College in 1948 in honor of Seth Motiram K. Desai Topiwala, who made a generous donation of Rs. 5 lakhs to the college. In 1946, Bombay University affiliated TNMC, and the MBBS program was fully recognized. The college and hospital were completely demolished and rebuilt as modern multi-storeyed structures in 1968, transforming into the contemporary campus known today. The campus spans 20 acres in the heart of Mumbai, adjacent to the 1,800-bed BYL Nair Charitable Hospital, which serves as the primary teaching hospital. TNMC is administered by the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) and affiliated with Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS), Nashik. It is recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC) and has achieved ISO 9001 certification for 7 of its departments. The college offers 150 MBBS seats annually, along with a comprehensive range of postgraduate (MD, MS), super-specialty (DM, M.Ch.), allied health, and PG diploma courses across more than 25 medical and allied branches, including 9 super-specialty programs. The BYL Nair Charitable Hospital is one of Mumbai's busiest tertiary care centers with approximately 1,800 beds and 11 operation theatres performing 39 operations daily. It has the oldest gastroenterology department in Mumbai, and is a center of excellence for dermatopathology, robotic surgery, and numerous other specializations. TNMC has more than 250 senior teaching staff members supported by 400 resident doctors, providing students with mentorship from highly experienced clinicians. The central library is an impressive academic resource, covering 10,830 sq. ft. and housing thousands of books, Indian and foreign medical journals, and digital resources. Library hours are 8:30 AM to 10:00 PM on weekdays, ensuring adequate study time for students. The college campus has separate hostels for boys and girls. TNMC has 2 boys' hostels — one in the B wing on the campus building with 17 rooms, and another external hostel approximately 2.5 km away with 117 rooms. The girls' hostel (Haji Ali Hostel Campus) has 50 rooms, along with 48 rooms in the Nurses Quarters Building and 17 rooms in the D wing, accommodating approximately 150 girls. TNMC is ranked 40th in Medicine (NIRF 2024) and 48th nationally in the medical category. IIRF ranks it 37th among medical colleges nationally (2025), and Collegedunia ranks it 75th out of 632 medical colleges. The college has been consistently ranked among the top 3 medical colleges in Maharashtra. TNMC internship extends over 12 months — 8 months at Nair Hospital, 2 months at Peripheral Hospital, and 2 months at Community Medicine, providing well-rounded exposure. As a government municipal college, TNMC offers highly affordable MBBS education (total fee approximately ₹6,62,400 for 4.5 years) with exceptional clinical exposure in one of India's busiest public hospitals. The institution has produced generations of eminent physicians and surgeons who have served India and the world. Its rich century-old heritage, central Mumbai location, affordable fees, and unmatched clinical environment make TNMC one of the most sought-after government medical colleges in India.
