About Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, Burla

Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR), formerly known as VSS Medical College and originally as Burla Medical College (BMC), is a premier government medical institution located in Burla, Sambalpur District, Odisha. Established in 1959, it is the second medical college in Odisha and the 54th in India at the time of its founding. The institution is named after Veer Surendra Sai — the legendary tribal freedom fighter and hero of western Odisha, who waged a fearless armed resistance against British colonial rule and remains a revered symbol of Odishan pride and tribal dignity. History: In 1958, Odisha Chief Minister Harekrushna Mahatab decided to establish a medical college at Burla to address the healthcare and education deficit in western Odisha. Burla Medical College (BMC) came into existence in July 1959 with 41 male and 9 female students — its first batch, transferred from SCB Medical College, Cuttack. The college was initially housed in the Old College Building (OCB) under the guidance of Radhanath Mishra, its first principal. Over the following decades, VIMSAR grew from a 50-seat institution into a 200-seat NMC-recognised medical college with super-specialty capabilities and a 900+ bed hospital. The institution was renamed to Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) to reflect its evolved scale and mandate. Academics & Programmes: VIMSAR offers MBBS (200 seats), MD/MS in multiple specialties (74 PG seats — 50% reserved for in-service candidates), and paramedical diploma courses (DMLT, DMRT, D.Pharm, Diploma Psychology Nursing, and others) plus B.Sc Nursing. An undergraduate student union is elected annually by campus-wide election from 4th-year students in March–April — a proud tradition of student democracy at VIMSAR. The MBBS programme has an acceptance rate of 0.2% (1 in 500 aspirants), reflecting extraordinary competition. Teaching Hospital: The VIMSAR hospital is the primary tertiary care referral centre for all of western Odisha (approximately 10 districts) and receives patients from neighbouring states of Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand. It has expanded to 900+ beds (with further super-specialty expansion including 60 ICU beds and 180 general beds in a new super-specialty building). The hospital has implemented an online OPD ticketing system across 13+ departments — one of Odisha's most technologically advanced government hospital initiatives. A new super-specialty building will house gastroenterology, endocrinology, neurology, and other departments. Campus Life: The 1st year boys hostel is named Charak. Most rooms accommodate 3–4 students with some 2-seater rooms with AC. Annual hostel fee is ~₹10,000. The library receives 136 periodicals annually and houses a large bound volume collection. Sports include cricket, football, badminton, basketball, volleyball, tennis, and indoor games. The campus also has a cafeteria, auditorium with AV equipment, and a gymnasium. Connectivity: VIMSAR is located at PG Chowk, Burla, Sambalpur — approximately 330 km northwest of Bhubaneswar. Veer Surendra Sai Airport (Jharsuguda) is approximately 69–70 km away. Hirakud Railway Station is approximately 4.7 km from campus. Burla Bus Stand is 750 metres away. In summary, VIMSAR Burla is western Odisha's premier government medical institution — the second oldest in the state, with 200 MBBS seats, 74 PG seats, a rapidly expanding 900+ bed hospital with super-specialty services, an online OPD system, and an inspiring legacy named after the great freedom fighter Veer Surendra Sai.
