Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT), Vellore is a private Deemed-to-be-University founded in 1984 by Dr. G. Viswanathan as the self-financing Vellore Engineering College, which was granted university status by the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development in 2001 under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956.
