About Zoram Medical College & Hospital, Falkawn, Mizoram
Zoram Medical College & Hospital (ZMC), Falkawn, Mizoram, holds the proud distinction of being the first and only medical college in the state of Mizoram. Previously known as Mizoram Institute of Medical Education & Research (MIMER), the college was inaugurated on 7 August 2018 by the then Chief Minister of Mizoram, Shri Lalthanhawla, at Falkawn — approximately 16 km from Aizawl, the state capital. The college was renamed Zoram Medical College on 26 April 2019 as per the decision of the Council of Ministers, Government of Mizoram, with 'Zoram' being a traditional Mizo reference to their homeland. On 20 December 2024, ZMC was formally converted into a fully government-owned institution — a landmark moment solidifying its public character and long-term funding stability. The history of ZMC's teaching hospital is a story of persistence. Construction of the State Referral Hospital at Falkawn began in 1999, funded by the Planning Commission of India, following the approval of Rs. 40 crore in 1996. However, due to political changes, the Mizo National Front government deviated from the original 300-bed plan, and the hospital commenced operations as a 50-bed unit in the Administrative Building on 21 July 2005. The bed capacity was subsequently enlarged to 150 beds on 10 December 2012. Today, the hospital has grown into a 470-bed multi-specialty tertiary care facility with 38 ICU beds, providing healthcare to over 3 lakh people in the surrounding area. ZMC is affiliated with Mizoram University, Aizawl, and is recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC). It holds a NAAC 'A' Grade accreditation, reflecting high institutional quality. The college is administered by the Health & Family Welfare Department, Government of Mizoram, and is the state's primary institution for medical education and research. The campus of ZMC is spread over 84.26 acres, located on a beautiful hillock with breathtaking surroundings at Falkawn — a semi-urban area approximately 16 km from Aizawl city centre, about 41 minutes by road. The campus offers a serene learning environment, well-separated from the noise of the city, while still being accessible by road and public transport. The college is approximately 35 km from Lengpui Airport (Aizawl Airport), the main airport serving Mizoram. Academic infrastructure at ZMC is well-developed: 2 large lecture theatres, examination halls, demonstration rooms, fully equipped clinical laboratories, departmental specimen museums, and a well-stocked central library are all functional. The college follows the NMC-mandated Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) curriculum for MBBS. The faculty strength stands at 68 professional faculty members covering all MBBS departments, supported by over 150 dedicated hospital staff. The student body is co-educational with approximately 198 students currently enrolled across MBBS years. ZMC offers 100 MBBS seats annually, with the following seat distribution as per Wikipedia (verified): 15% All India Quota, 15% NRI Quota, and 70% State Quota (Mizoram). State Quota admissions are conducted by the Technical Wing, Higher & Technical Education Department, Government of Mizoram, while All India Quota admissions are via MCC counselling. The fee structure at ZMC is amongst the most affordable in India for a recognized medical college. Annual tuition fee is ₹79,150 per year. Hostel accommodation is an additional ₹17,700 per year, making the first-year total approximately ₹96,850 — remarkably affordable for a full government medical college. This has earned ZMC recognition as one of India's most affordable MBBS programs. ZMC also offers MD/MS postgraduate programs across multiple specializations as approved by NMC. PG admissions are via NEET PG through 50% All India Quota (MCC) and 50% State Quota (H&TE Dept, Mizoram). The college maintains an Anti-Ragging Committee, Gender Harassment Cell, and Grievance Redressal mechanism, ensuring a safe and inclusive campus environment. Sports facilities include a cafeteria, well-equipped library, health centre, and outdoor sports grounds within the campus. Separate hostels are provided for male and female students on campus, with mess, Wi-Fi, reading rooms, and 24-hour security. Hostel accommodation for all students is prioritized, given the college's semi-rural location 16 km from Aizawl. As Mizoram's sole medical college, ZMC plays a uniquely important role in building the state's health workforce and meeting the medical education aspirations of Mizo youth. With its NAAC 'A' Grade, NMC approval, full government ownership from 2024, and a growing PG program portfolio, ZMC is well-positioned for continued growth as a premier Northeast medical institution.

Frequently Asked Questions
ZMC offers 100 MBBS seats annually. The distribution is: 70% (70 seats) for State Quota — Mizoram, allocated by the Technical Wing, H&TE Department, Government of Mizoram; 15% (15 seats) for All India Quota (MCC); and 15% (15 seats) for NRI Quota. Candidates cannot apply directly to ZMC — all seats are allotted through MCC or H&TE Dept, Mizoram.
For All India Quota (General category), the NEET UG cutoff at ZMC is approximately 570–630 marks (varying annually). For Mizoram State Quota (ST category — the majority of Mizoram students), the cutoff is lower, approximately 400–500 marks. Since only 1 AIQ candidate was allotted a seat in some recent years, AIQ competition is very stiff and candidates need high NEET scores. Actual cutoffs vary annually.
