This guide walks through the three most common alternatives: CMAT, conducted once a year by the National Testing Agency; MAT, conducted four times a year by AIMA; and direct or management-quota admission, offered by many private and deemed universities. Route 1: CMAT 2027, the NTA-Conducted National Exam

CMAT, the Common Management Admission Test, is conducted once a year by the National Testing Agency and is accepted by more than 1,000 AICTE-approved MBA and PGDM institutions, including well-known Mumbai colleges such as JBIMS, SIMSREE, PUMBA and K J Somaiya. Based on the pattern of the last two years, CMAT 2027 is expected to be held on 24 January 2027, with the official notification and registration likely opening in October or November 2026. As of this writing, NTA has not released the formal CMAT 2027 notification, so treat this date as an expected estimate based on past cycles rather than confirmed.

Eligibility: a bachelor's degree in any discipline from a recognised university; final-year students can apply.
Exam pattern: 100 questions across five sections, typically Quantitative Techniques and Data Interpretation, Logical Reasoning, Language Comprehension, General Awareness, and Innovation and Entrepreneurship, over 180 minutes.
Application fee: expected to remain close to last year's Rs 2,500 for general male candidates and Rs 1,250 for women and reserved-category candidates.
Only one attempt is available per year since CMAT runs a single national session, unlike MAT.

Route 2: MAT 2026, Four Chances a Year

MAT, the Management Aptitude Test conducted by the All India Management Association, is the most flexible national-level option on this list because AIMA runs it four times a year, in February, May, September and December. If one session does not go well, you can retake it in the very next cycle and most of the 600-plus accepting B-schools consider your best score within its one-year validity. The September 2026 session is open right now, with the Paper-Based Test on 13 September 2026 and the Computer-Based Test on 20 September 2026. Registration for the paper mode closes on 7 September 2026, and for the computer-based mode on 14 September 2026. AIMA has not yet announced the December 2026 session dates.

Eligibility: a bachelor's degree in any discipline; there is no minimum percentage requirement and no age limit.
Exam pattern: 150 questions across five sections, Language Comprehension, Mathematical Skills, Data Analysis and Sufficiency, Intelligence and Critical Reasoning, and Indian and Global Environment, in 120 minutes.
Application fee: around Rs 2,300 for a single mode and about Rs 4,000 if you register for both PBT and CBT in the same session.
MAT scores go directly to up to five B-schools of your choice as part of the application, which many first-time applicants find convenient.

Route 3: Direct or Management Quota Admission

A number of private and deemed universities admit MBA students directly, based on your academic record and a personal interview, without requiring CAT, CMAT, MAT, XAT, SNAP or NMAT. This route is common at university-run management departments and at private institutes running their own entrance and interview process under their own admission policy. It works well if you want quick admission, have a strong academic record, or are applying close to the start of the academic session when other entrance-based admissions have already closed.

Always confirm that the institute is AICTE-approved or UGC-recognised, and that the specific programme you are applying to carries valid approval for the current academic year.
Ask for the college's NAAC or NBA accreditation status and its last two years of placement data before paying any admission or seat-blocking fee.
Be cautious of colleges that guarantee admission purely on payment of fees without any academic or interview screening, since this can indicate weak recognition or a diploma-equivalent programme rather than a genuine AICTE-approved MBA.
Direct admission fees can be higher than entrance-based seats at the same institute, so compare the total programme cost against entrance-route options before committing.
Check whether the direct admission seat falls under a management quota with a capped percentage of total seats, since some states and universities regulate how many seats can be filled this way.

A direct admission seat is only as good as the college behind it, so verify the institute's approval and placement record before you verify anything else.

What to Verify Before Choosing Any of These Routes

Check that the MBA or PGDM programme is currently AICTE-approved or that the university offering the MBA degree is UGC-recognised.
Look at the last two to three years of placement reports directly from the official college website, not from third-party aggregators alone.
Confirm the total programme fee, including hostel and other charges if applicable, and compare it against the expected starting salary range for that college's recent batches.
For CMAT and MAT, check the exact registration and exam dates on the official NTA or AIMA website closer to the date, since notification timelines can shift.
