Karnataka tops the state-wise matrix by a clear margin, driven largely by its high number of private and deemed medical colleges. Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh follow, each combining a strong government college base with a sizeable private and deemed sector.

Understanding College-Wise Seats in the Matrix

The full NMC document lists every medical college in the country individually, row by row, with a college code, state, institution name, category (Govt./Pvt./Deemed), the specific course such as M.D. General Medicine or M.Ch. Neurosurgery, and the number of seats approved for that course at that college for 2026-27.
For example, a large government institution such as Andhra Medical College, Visakhapatnam carries seats across a wide spread of broad-speciality courses like General Medicine, General Surgery and Radio-Diagnosis, alongside super-speciality DM and M.Ch courses such as Cardiology and Neurosurgery. A central or state-run institute like Gauhati Medical College similarly lists both broad MD/MS courses and DM/M.Ch courses such as Nephrology and Urology. Because this college-by-college detail runs into hundreds of pages, always refer to the official document for the exact current seat count at any specific college rather than relying on a short summary.

How to Check the Official NEET PG 2026 Seat Matrix

  1. Visit the official NMC website and look under the 'What's New' section on the homepage.
  2. Find the notice titled 'Seat Matrix for Postgraduate (PG) seats for the Academic Year 2026-27' dated September 29, 2026.
  3. Open or download the attached PDF, which lists every participating college, course and seat count state by state.
  4. Use your browser's search function (Ctrl+F) to jump directly to a specific college or state name within the document.
  5. Keep checking the same section for any updated matrix, since additional seats approved later are published as a revised version.

AIQ vs State Quota: What the Matrix Covers

This NMC matrix lists the total approved PG intake at every college, regardless of quota. From this total, MCC conducts counselling for the 50% All India Quota seats in government medical colleges, along with 100% of seats in deemed universities, central institutes, ESIC and AFMS institutions. The remaining state quota seats in government colleges are allotted by each state's own counselling authority, using the same underlying seat numbers published by NMC.
A seat matrix is only the starting point. The number that actually matters to a candidate is the live, round-specific matrix published once counselling begins, since colleges, categories and seat counts can shift before then.
— Common advice from NEET PG counselling mentors

Why the Seat Matrix Can Still Change

  • Applications for an increase in intake at existing colleges, or for entirely new PG courses, are processed separately and added to a later, updated matrix once approved.
  • The matrix remains subject to revision based on decisions of the Appeal Committee or any other competent authority.
  • Medical colleges and counselling committees are required to report any discrepancy, error or omission in the published matrix to NMC's Medical Assessment & Rating Board before counselling begins wherever possible.
  • No college is permitted to admit students beyond its approved intake as reflected in the latest notified matrix; any admission in excess is treated as a violation under the National Medical Commission Act, 2019.

What This Means for NEET PG 2026 Counselling

MCC's own PG counselling page had been noting that the seat matrix from NMC and NBEMS was awaited before PG counselling 2026 could commence. With this matrix now published, MCC and the state counselling authorities can proceed to notify the counselling schedule, including registration, choice filling and round dates. Keep checking the official MCC website for the formal counselling notice rather than assuming a start date.
Use these predictor and admission pages to plan your college options against your expected rank, and rely only on the official links below for the exact, current seat matrix and counselling schedule.
