Aarupadai Veedu Medical College & Hospital (AVMC&H), located at Kirumampakkam on the Pondicherry–Cuddalore National Highway, is a renowned private medical college founded in 2000 under the Thirumuruga Kirupananda Variyar Thavathiru Sundara Swamigal Medical Educational and Charitable Trust (TKV TSSME Trust), established in 1981 by Founder Chancellor Dr. A. Shanmugasundaram. It is the very first medical college in Pondicherry, blazing a trail that preceded even IGMCRI. The institution is affiliated with Vinayaka Mission's Research Foundation Deemed to be University and is fully recognised by the National Medical Commission (NMC). AVMC started its first batch of 100 MBBS students in the 2000–2001 session (initially affiliated with Pondicherry University, then transitioning to Vinayaka Missions in 2004). Annual intake was subsequently raised to 150. The college is part of a comprehensive health sciences campus that also houses AVMC School of Nursing, School of Allied Health Sciences, School of Physiotherapy, and a PhD programme — creating a rich interdisciplinary environment. Campus & Infrastructure: The campus sprawls across 65 acres (various sources cite 44–65 acres) of lush green land with over 33% of the area dedicated to greenery. The campus embodies sustainability — eco-friendly initiatives include a plastic-free zone, shaded walking paths, vehicle-free areas, e-cycles for campus travel, rainwater harvesting, solar energy, and waste recycling in alignment with UNESCO's Sustainable Development Goals. The college has four air-conditioned gallery-type lecture halls: three holding 180 students and one holding 250 students, each equipped with LCD projectors, OHP, and AV systems. Each department has two demo halls with 75-student capacity each. The auditorium can accommodate 750 people. The library houses 12,950 books, 100 Indian and international journals, an e-learning centre with 30 systems, Wi-Fi, and AV equipment. AVMC recently hosted a four-day meet on robotic surgery and AR in orthopaedics in collaboration with the Pondicherry Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Teaching Hospital: The AVMCH hospital has grown to 574 (per official website) to 580+ functional beds, spread over 2,20,000 sq ft. It records 3 lakh+ outpatient attendances and 30,000+ inpatients annually. It has fully equipped ICCU, ICU, PICU, NICU, and high dependency areas, modular operation theatres with contemporary anaesthesia equipment. Broad and super-specialty departments include Cardiology, Urology, Medical Gastroenterology, Plastic Surgery, Paediatric Surgery, and Nephrology. Advanced technology includes laparoscopy, ESWL/lithotripsy, PUVA chamber, laser instruments, Dialysis, Audiology & Speech Therapy, and a fully operational Pharmacy and Blood Bank. The hospital accepts government and third-party insurance schemes. Campus Lifestyle: Student amenities include a serene spa, gym, and media rooms in hostels, a supermarket, ATM, cafeteria, and fast-food outlet. More than 95% of students come from outside Pondicherry state. During 2021–2024 counselling, 9 candidates received MBBS allotment at AVMC under MCC deemed counselling.
